Michael B. Jordan Names Princess Mononoke His Favorite Movie Ever

After winning an Academy Award for his performance in Sinners, the actor revealed his all-time favorite movie: a beloved fantasy film from 1994. He shared this during his acceptance speech on Sunday night.

Actor Jordan, recently winning Best Actor for playing twins in Sinners, shared his all-time favorite movie in a new Instagram interview on Sunday. When asked, he enthusiastically named Princess Mononoke. You can watch the clip below.

Princess Mononoke Is a Favorite Film for Many

Princess Mononoke is a fantasy anime film created by Hayao Miyazaki. The story takes place during Japan’s Muromachi period and centers on Ashitaka, a young warrior who is cursed after defending his village from a demon. To break the curse, Ashitaka travels on a journey that leads him into a fierce battle between humans and the forest’s spirits – including wolves and gods – who are fighting to save their home. During his travels, he meets San, a young woman raised by wolves, who is dedicated to protecting the forest from human destruction.

Released in 1997, Princess Mononoke quickly became a massive hit, breaking box office records in Japan. It was the first of Hayao Miyazaki’s films to receive a wide international release, debuting in North America with an English dub thanks to Miramax Films. Today, it’s considered a classic anime film, consistently earning high praise from both critics and viewers – currently holding a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Jordan’s fondness for the movie is clearly shared by many.

Michael B. Jordan Is Now an Oscar Winner

Michael B. Jordan first gained recognition as an actor in last year’s popular vampire film, Sinners, which was written and directed by Ryan Coogler. While Sinners wasn’t named Best Picture, Jordan’s win for Best Actor wasn’t surprising, as he was a strong contender. In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the Black actors who had won Oscars previously, acknowledging they paved the way for his own historic achievement.

I’m here today thanks to the actors who paved the way – Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith. It’s an incredible honor to be mentioned alongside such legends, my heroes, and those who inspire me. Thank you to everyone here and watching at home for all your support throughout my career; I truly felt it.

As a huge film buff, I was thrilled to see that both Princess Mononoke and Sinners – the movie that finally got Jordan an Academy Award – are currently available to stream on HBO Max. It’s a great time to revisit these two fantastic films!
