A Japanese metal band that started as an AI project transformed into a real group when its creator, after revealing the initial setup to fans, brought in human musicians to perform live concerts.
If you enjoy Japanese ‘kawaii metal,’ you’ve probably come across NEON ONI. They’re becoming increasingly popular on Spotify, currently reaching over 79,000 monthly listeners. Their most popular track, ‘SATORi SEDAi,’ has been streamed over 1.2 million times.
The band consists of seven members: vocalists JOJO and LISA, guitarists MIACAT and NIK, bassist JURI, drummer MIRKO, and producer KAGE.
NEON ONI appears to be a promising new band in a fairly specific music style, but surprisingly, it’s the work of a single creator who primarily used artificial intelligence to produce their music.
AI band creator hires real musicians for concerts in response to fan demand
NEON ONI first started creating content for social media in September 2025, and has been active ever since.
Early reactions to the artists’ music videos and Instagram posts have been overwhelmingly positive, with fans expressing excitement and predicting future success. One YouTube commenter even wrote, “I knew they were amazing before anyone else!”
As more videos from NEON ONI were released, fans began to spot strange visual details that suggested the content was created using artificial intelligence. This quickly led to accusations that the band was entirely AI-generated, or at least used AI in their music videos, sparking widespread debate on social media.
Heads up: Neon Oni isn’t a real band! It’s completely fake, created by artificial intelligence. It’s surprising how many people are being tricked by this low-quality content.

According to some reports, people who doubted the band’s origins discovered its creator was based in Europe. They believe the creator used an AI music program called Sumo to create NEON ONI’s songs, including the vocals, instruments, and lyrics.
Although these statements haven’t been confirmed, the group has publicly stated that it was created using artificial intelligence. Their Spotify profile describes them as an extremely cute metal band originating from AI, brought to life for their listeners.
It started as a simple test within a computer, never intended for anyone to hear, much less become something significant. But people did listen, they connected with it, and consistently asked for more.
It started as a digital project, but quickly became much bigger than anyone anticipated. Fans loved the music, artwork, and stories so much they wanted more than just a virtual experience. Their biggest wish? To bring it to life in the real world.

Fans can now purchase tickets to experience a live NEON ONI performance, featuring seven artists who are bringing this virtual project to life on stage.
The band kicks off a Japan tour on March 29th, playing shows in cities like Shibuya, Kawaguchi, and Osaka. Fans can also shop for merchandise online, and those who can’t make it to a show can watch the first performance live online.
It’s kinda wild, but NEON ONI isn’t the first AI artist to trick people! Around the same time I started hearing about them, this AI R&B singer, Xania Monet, actually landed a huge record deal with Hallwood Media – and they’re even planning on doing live shows, which is just mind-blowing!
So, back in July, this band called Velvet Sundown was getting super popular, but people started wondering if they were even real! Fans were trying to find info about the band members online, and when they couldn’t, rumors started flying that they were totally AI-generated. The band quickly denied it, saying they were definitely real people.
