Fans are excited about the potential return of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. New artwork for a possible future installment, tentatively titled Avengers: Doomsday, gives a glimpse of what their return might look like. Both actors have been central figures in the MCU’s biggest successes, effectively becoming the public face of the franchise, and their impact on the series has been huge.
I’m so excited to see Marvel really hitting its stride again! It feels like they’re answering all our wishes with their upcoming movies. The best part? Chris Evans is back as Captain America! And get this – Robert Downey Jr. isn’t returning as Iron Man, but he’s taking on the role of Doctor Doom in the new Avengers: Doomsday film! I’ve already seen some amazing fan art imagining their return, and it’s got me even more hyped for 2026.
Instagram artist @odimi_ shared images showing how Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans might appear as Doctor Doom and Captain America, if they were to play those roles in a potential Avengers: Doomsday movie.
Following the recent Academy Awards reunion of Marvel Cinematic Universe actors, fans have been creating artwork inspired by the event. At the Oscars, the actors presented Ryan Coogler, director of the Black Panther films, with the Best Original Screenplay award for his movie Sinners. The fan art features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, using designs originally developed for the MCU, and Chris Evans as Captain America in his costume from Avengers: Endgame.
Doctor Doom And Steve Rogers Are Likely To Be Major Enemies In The MCU
News about the story for Avengers: Doomsday has been limited. Marvel showed four short teasers before Avatar: Fire and Ash, but none of them featured Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom or gave away details about the movie’s plot. However, the Russo Brothers hinted at Chris Evans returning as Captain America, stating, “It was always going to come back to this.”
Given Steve Rogers’ important role in Avengers: Doomsday and the anticipation that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be the primary villain in the next two Avengers films, it’s likely we’ll see a rivalry develop between Captain America and Doctor Doom. This could allow Marvel to recreate the successful dynamic Chris Evans and Downey Jr. had, but with a new twist.
Will Chris Evans Don The Captain America Suit In Avengers: Doomsday?
Fans are loving the art celebrating Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.’s recent get-together and potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, seeing Evans back in the Captain America suit from Avengers: Endgame might remain a dream. The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday shows Steve Rogers carefully putting away his Captain America suit, suggesting he’s embraced a new life as a father and a retired hero.
While Steve Rogers might team up with other Marvel heroes against Doctor Doom, it’s probably safe to say Chris Evans won’t be returning as Captain America. With Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, now officially taking on the role, it’s unlikely Evans will wear the suit again, whether it’s the classic version or a new design.
For now, the fan art recreating the Oscar reunion seems to be the closest fans will get to seeing Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. together in their Avengers suits, reminiscent of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ era.
