Scream 7 is making a lot of noise at the box office.
The latest installment in the 30-year-old Scream series broke records upon release, despite a rocky start. While Scream 7 initially received the lowest critic score in the franchise (31%), it went on to achieve the best opening weekend box office ($63.6 million) – only to experience the biggest second-week drop in the series’ history (-73.3%).
According to Variety, Scream 7 has earned $176.9 million worldwide after three weekends in theaters. Of that, $107 million came from North American theaters, and $69.9 million from international markets. This makes it the most successful Scream movie ever, surpassing the original 1996 film’s $173 million global total and setting a new franchise record.
While the latest Scream movie is doing very well, it’s currently the second highest-grossing film in the series domestically. Scream VI from 2023 holds the top spot, earning $108.4 million. However, the new movie is close behind and is expected to break that record soon – likely before the end of its third week in cinemas – as it only needs to make another $1.4 million.
While the latest Scream movie currently holds the record for highest-grossing film in the series based on raw numbers, things change when you account for inflation. The first three Scream movies each earned over $300 million worldwide when adjusted for inflation, and Scream VI brought in $182.2 million globally. This means Scream 7 is actually the fifth highest-grossing film in the series when considering inflation. Here’s a look at how all the Scream movies have performed, both with and without adjusting for inflation:
| Title | Domestic Total | Global Total | Global Total (Adj.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scream (1996) | $103 million | $173 million | $354.8 million |
| Scream 2 (1997) | $101.4 million | $172.4 million | $347.6 million |
| Scream 3 (2000) | $89.1 million | $161.8 million | $310 million |
| Scream 4 (2011) | $38.2 million | $96 million | $138.8 million |
| Scream (2022) | $81.6 million | $138.8 million | $160.6 million |
| Scream VI (2023) | $108.4 million | $169.1 million | $182.2 million |
| Scream 7 (2026) | $107 million (so far) | $176.9 million (so far) | N/A |
The next Scream movie, due in 2026, is expected to perform better than Scream VI, potentially becoming the most financially successful film in the series since the first three movies. However, reaching $300 million in total earnings would be a significant challenge, and surpassing the original Scream‘s adjusted total of $354.8 million would be even harder.
Although some horror movies become huge box office successes – earning over $300 million worldwide – it’s actually quite rare. Only 23 horror films have ever reached that milestone, when looking at unadjusted numbers. Of those, just five were released in the 2020s: Final Destination Bloodlines ($317.8 million), Alien: Romulus ($350.9 million), Sinners ($369 million), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($452 million), and The Conjuring: Last Rites ($499.1 million).
It’s still too early to know how well Scream 7 will do overall, but despite setting a new record, the film is facing challenges. These include negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and calls for a boycott following the firing of Melissa Barrera, a star from Scream (2022) and Scream VI, after she posted supportive messages about Palestine on social media in 2023.
