The Firefly announcement is finally here.
The science fiction series Firefly first aired in 2002, but was unfortunately cancelled by Fox after just one season. Despite its short run, the show—created by Joss Whedon—has continued to gain popularity over the years, attracting new fans alongside its dedicated original followers. Although it didn’t continue on television, the story lived on with the 2005 film Serenity, and later expanded into comic books. Currently, there’s a lot of excitement about the possibility of revisiting this beloved universe.
The buzz began with Nathan Fillion sharing posts reconnecting with his old co-stars. Although they were already scheduled to appear at AwesomeCon in Washington, DC, the hints about something more didn’t really gain traction until recently. It seemed like a clever way to build excitement for their panel discussion. Now, though, the ongoing posts are getting a lot of attention, and fans are starting to wonder if a Firefly reboot might actually be happening.
As they’d hinted, the cast of Firefly – including Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, and Alan Tudyk – revealed their big news at AwesomeCon (reported by Deadline). While a traditional revival seems unlikely due to everyone’s busy schedules, they’re giving fans a new project: an animated series. The show is being developed by Nathan Fillion’s production company, Collision33, in collaboration with 20th Television Animation.
