The Monsterverse Reinvents A 37-Year-Old Godzilla Kaiju

The Monsterverse is breathing new life into classic monsters from the Godzilla universe for its newest film, potentially hinting at what’s to come. The franchise draws many of its powerful Titans – like the gentle Mothra and the terrifying King Ghidorah – from Toho’s original Godzilla characters. This approach allows the films to feature well-known creatures while still forging their own unique path.

The MonsterVerse often draws inspiration from classic monsters, and it’s done so again with Tiamat in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, who shares similarities with Toho’s Manda. The latest new Titan introduced seems to follow this pattern, but it could also be setting up interesting possibilities for the future of the series.

Monarch’s Titan X Shares Striking Similarities To Biollante

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has revealed Titan X, a massive creature from the Hollow Earth. This aquatic behemoth made its debut when Cate saved Lee Shaw. Titan X is characterized by its tentacles, alligator-like head, and rounded body, and it’s shaping up to be the next major threat in the Apple TV+ Monsterverse series.

Though not explicitly stated, Titan X in season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters shares striking similarities with the Godzilla monster Biollante. First appearing in Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989), Biollante is a plant-based kaiju with a crocodile-like face, created by splicing Godzilla’s DNA. Like Titan X, she has a bulky, rounded form and is covered in vine-like, toothy growths.

The connections between them go even further. Both Biollante and Titan X share a psychic link with humans, but the nature of that link is different for each creature. Biollante was created by combining Godzilla’s DNA with a rose and the cells of a woman named Erika Shiragami, and her spirit now lives within Biollante, essentially acting as the kaiju’s consciousness.

The origins of Titan X’s connection to humans are still a mystery. However, there’s a clear pattern: in the past, Keiko could somehow sense when Titan X was approaching a village, and now Cate can feel its movement towards the Monarch and Apex vessels. This isn’t likely a random occurrence; there seems to be a definite link between the creature and certain individuals.

The main difference between these two monsters is that while Titan X is seen as a force of destruction, Biollante is a hero. In her film, she battles an evil Godzilla, protecting both the natural world and people. This makes Titan X seem much more threatening in comparison.

How Titan X’s Biollante Connection Sets Up The Monsterverse’s Future

As a huge Godzilla fan, I’m pretty sure it’s a given that the new Monarch series is going to have Godzilla and Titan X battling it out soon. The trailers have already shown they’re going to clash, and honestly, it’s got me thinking about the classic Godzilla vs. Biollante – I’m hoping for some similar vibes! But how the fight will actually go? That’s still a mystery, and I’m dying to find out.

Titan X might have a larger story arc in the Monsterverse beyond what we’ve seen in the Monarch series. Similar to the Godzilla films from the Heisei era, where Biollante spread cells after her fight with Godzilla – which fans believe led to the creation of Spacegodzilla, the villain in Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla (1994) – Titan X could potentially lead to the emergence of other monsters.

There’s a lot of talk that Spacegodzilla will be the main villain in the next Monsterverse movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. If Titan X is like a darker version of Biollante, it might share a similar history with Spacegodzilla. The story we’re seeing in season 2 of Monarch could be setting up this connection.

If true, this would strongly connect Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to the existing Monsterverse films. It would also establish Titan X as a sinister counterpart to Biollante, positioning it as a dangerous enemy and hinting at a larger threat to come.

New episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters air Fridays on Apple TV.
