While Henry Cavill’s appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine was a big moment, it wasn’t actually his first foray into the Marvel world. He made a brief, uncredited appearance in a Marvel movie months earlier. For years, fans had speculated about the Superman actor joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Deadpool & Wolverine finally brought those rumors to fruition.
Everyone was excited to see Henry Cavill join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s worth remembering he’d actually been in a movie based on a Marvel comic before. That earlier movie took the story in a very different direction than the typical MCU films, focusing on a less traditional superhero narrative – making it a curious bit of comic book movie history.
Henry Cavill’s Marvel Movie Debut Technically Happened At The Very Start Of 2024
Everyone was excited to see Henry Cavill as one of the many Wolverines in Deadpool & Wolverine when it came out in July 2024, but he’d actually already been in a Marvel-based project a few months earlier.
It turns out Henry Cavill actually made his first appearance in the Marvel universe with January 2024’s Argylle, a movie connected to the Kingsman series. Kingsman itself began as a Marvel comic, meaning Argylle technically predates Deadpool & Wolverine as his Marvel debut. However, Deadpool & Wolverine still marked Cavill’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
It’s not surprising that Argylle was overlooked by many, considering the comic it’s based on ended up being published by Image Comics. The movie also doesn’t emphasize its connection to the Kingsman series; instead, the story centers around the main character realizing the spy novels she’s written are actually revealing real espionage secrets.
The spy comedy received mixed reviews – critics gave it a low score of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences enjoyed it much more, with a 70% rating. This difference led to more discussion about why people disagreed with each other than about the movie itself, shifting the focus away from the film’s actual content.
Deadpool & Wolverine Gave Henry Cavill Two 2024 Marvel Movie Debuts In The Same Year
As a huge movie fan, let me tell you, everyone was buzzing about Deadpool & Wolverine – especially all the surprise cameos, including Henry Cavill’s! It totally overshadowed Argylle this year. Part of it was that it was the only Marvel Cinematic Universe movie we got in 2024, but also, it was a massive hit – over a billion dollars at the box office! Plus, it was a huge deal seeing the worlds of Fox’s Marvel movies and the MCU finally collide. It felt like a really pivotal moment for the franchise.
It’s not surprising that Henry Cavill’s second debut role generated more buzz than his first, especially considering the long-held fan desire to see him in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project. This excitement was intensified by the news that he wouldn’t be continuing as Superman for DC, with David Corenswet taking over the role in the new DC Universe.
However, all of this actually makes Henry Cavill’s first appearance in Argylle even more noteworthy. It was released about six months before the Marvel film, and like Kingsman, it’s a reminder that many people don’t realize the story originally came from a comic book.
