Taylor Sheridan is known for creating the expanding Yellowstone universe with shows like Y: Marshals and Dutton Ranch, but he also has a background writing critically acclaimed films. One of his most popular movies, directed by a celebrated filmmaker, is a favorite among action movie fans and is now available on a new streaming platform.
Written by Sheridan, the gripping thriller Sicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker behind Dune, and starred a fantastic cast including Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro, who both delivered standout performances. Released in 2015, the film is widely considered a top-tier modern action thriller and is currently available to stream on Netflix.
In the film Sicario, Emily Blunt plays Kate Macer, a dedicated FBI agent who joins a task force fighting the drug trade. She quickly realizes the team, headed by the mysterious Matt Graver (Josh Brolin), operates outside the law, leaving her questioning her involvement with no clear escape. Released in 2015, Sicario was highly praised by critics, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While Rotten Tomatoes audiences gave it a solid 85% score, Letterboxd users loved it even more, awarding it a 4.0 out of 5 stars.
‘Sicario’ Is Tightly Written and Perfectly Directed
Taylor Sheridan’s latest crime thriller is arguably his finest work, starting with a powerfully written script. The film’s carefully controlled speed, realistic dialogue, and constant air of mystery combine to create a remarkably tense and gripping action thriller – one of the best in recent memory.
I’m such a fan of Denis Villeneuve, and honestly, Sicario feels like a film only he could have created. It’s just got a certain something, a unique vision. I tried watching the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and while it wasn’t bad, it just didn’t have that same incredible visual style and masterful touch that Villeneuve brought to the first movie. You really notice the difference!
Roger Deakins’ cinematography deserves huge praise. Everything he films looks stunning. But in Sicario, he does more than just create beautiful images – the way the camera captures the massive scale of the drug war and subtly hints at the questionable ethics of the team’s actions is truly masterful. Sicario is not only a fantastic action thriller, it’s also a valuable resource for aspiring filmmakers.
What’s Going On With ‘Sicario 3’?

Columbia Pictures
While Sicario: Day of the Soldado wasn’t quite as strong as the first film, it was still a compelling action thriller and did well at the box office, earning $75 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. That’s why many were surprised it took eight years to start working on Sicario 3. Fortunately, it seems a third movie is finally happening. In an August 2025 interview, Josh Brolin confirmed the project is moving forward, stating it’s “Very, very real.” No cast has been officially announced yet, but Brolin is likely to return. Fans are also hoping to see Emily Blunt reprise her role as Kate Mercer, as she didn’t appear in Day of the Soldado.
