The Imperial Guardians have returned to the Marvel Universe, but they’ve changed significantly after the recent ‘Imperial’ storyline. That event involved Maximus of the Inhumans forming a new galactic alliance and taking control of the Kree Empire. Now, with this fragile peace in place, the Guardians will act as a special forces team, working alongside Maximus to maintain it.
As established in Imperial War: Imperial Guardians #1, Maximus used the Cosmic Ghost Rider to eliminate Gamora and Darkhawk when they started uncovering his plans. However, this week’s Imperial Guardians #1 revealed the Cosmic Ghost Rider revived them. After discovering that Peter Quill, Star-Lord, is supporting Maximus, Gamora and Darkhawk decided to team up with Captain Marvel, Amadeus Cho, and even the one who killed them, the Cosmic Ghost Rider, forming a new group of Guardians.
According to author Dan Abnett, the most compelling aspect of this book is its core idea – the team’s mission and the reasons behind it. The story’s tension arises from how the characters interact and learn about each other. While there’s conflict within the team, it’s more about personal issues than outright competition. He believes this approach is similar in spirit to Guardians of the Galaxy, but offers a unique and engaging twist. Unlike typical underdog stories, this team is a focused, highly skilled special operations unit.

Okay, so the galaxy’s finally at peace thanks to the Galactic Union, which is awesome. But someone’s gotta keep it that way, right? And that ‘someone’ is usually me and the Imperial Guardians. Today’s mission? Well, let’s just say Maximus, that sneaky Inhuman, has sent his special ops team to deal with a real mess – the kind of problem everyone else avoids. Another day, another dirty job for us, basically.
The team is headed to Xarth, a relatively small civilization with surprisingly big plans. They’ve recently acquired something that could instantly make them a powerful force in the galaxy – or completely destroy the Union. And they won’t surrender it easily…

The Guardians are traveling to Xarth, where they’ll face strong resistance from the Xarthians. Artist Marcelo Ferreira delivers exciting action as Gamora and the Cosmic Ghost Rider battle Xarthian forces!
There’s a scene where Captain Marvel comforts Darkhawk, who’s been troubled by disturbing visions of the future since being killed by the Cosmic Ghost Rider. Captain Marvel is helping him cope with these visions, and it’s hinted she might relate to his experience, given her own past ability to foresee the future.
You’ll have to check out Imperial Guardians #2 next month to see these gorgeous pages with dialogue!
