Keanu Reeves’ $350 Million Action Classic ‘Speed’ Is a Streaming Success on Hulu

While Keanu Reeves is now famous for his incredible action scenes in the John Wick movies, this isn’t the first time he’s been a major action star. Before John Wick brought him back to prominence in 2014, Reeves dominated the action genre throughout the 1990s. After getting his start in Bill & Ted (which wasn’t an action film), he starred with Patrick Swayze in the iconic ’90s movie Point Break. However, it’s another one of his classic action films that’s currently gaining popularity on streaming services.

Following his role in the 1990s action film Point Break, Keanu Reeves returned to the genre with Speed, co-starring Sandra Bullock and Jeff Daniels. While Point Break is a beloved ’90s classic, Speed has become a truly timeless film. Recently added to Hulu, Speed quickly became a hit, surging to the seventh most popular movie on the platform’s weekly chart.

Jan de Bont’s Speed is a beloved action film. Starring Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Glen Plummer, and Alan Ruck, the movie centers on Jack Traven (Reeves), a cop who must defuse a bomb planted on a bus. The catch? The bus can’t drop below 60 miles per hour, or it will explode. Dennis Hopper plays Howard Payne, the terrorist responsible for the bus bomb and a series of other explosions throughout the city.

‘Speed’ & Its Absolutely Atrocious Sequel

As I’ve mentioned a few times, Speed is truly one of the greatest action films ever made. The acting is fantastic, the story moves at a perfect pace, and the stunts still look amazing today. Sadly, the sequel doesn’t live up to the original.

The movie Speed was a huge financial success, earning $350 million around the world, so it’s no surprise that studio executives wanted to make another one. Three years later, Sandra Bullock reprised her role as Annie Porter, joined by Jason Patric and Willem Dafoe. Interestingly, Keanu Reeves didn’t return for the sequel, and looking back, that might have been a good thing for him.

The follow-up to the original Speed moved the action to a cruise ship and was titled Speed 2: Cruise Control. Unfortunately, a cruise ship wasn’t a great location for a fast-paced action film, and both critics and viewers disliked it. Speed 2 has a very low 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences only gave it a slightly better 16%.

‘Speed 3’ Already Exists… Kind Of

20th Century Fox

There’s been talk recently about Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock potentially making a third Speed movie at 20th Century Studios. However, a Speed 3 already exists – it’s an episode from Season 3 of the Irish comedy Father Ted. In the episode, Father Dougal takes on a job as a milkman, but his deliveries turn dangerous when a bomb is attached to his milk float. The catch? The float has to stay above three miles per hour, or it will explode. You can stream Father Ted on BritBox through Apple TV+ and Prime Video.
