Who Killed Tanya in The White Lotus (& Why It Was So Controversial)

Tanya is a standout character in the popular HBO series, and the way she died still causes a lot of discussion among viewers. The show explores the dramatic – and sometimes fatal – relationships between the staff and guests at the high-end White Lotus Hotel. Each season is set in a new beautiful location – Hawaii, Italy, and Thailand so far – and features a different group of characters. A potential murder is usually teased right at the beginning of each new season.

The White Lotus is a standout anthology series of recent years, and each season cleverly brings back a familiar face. Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Tanya, quickly became a fan favorite, earning her numerous awards for her performances in the first two seasons. While her unexpected death at the end of Season 2 shocked viewers, Tanya remains central to the story in Season 3, largely through the reappearance of characters from the very first season.

Tanya Accidentally Dies in The White Lotus Season 2 Finale

Tanya’s hoping for romance with her boyfriend Greg on a trip to Sicily, but he’s constantly in a bad mood. Things get even more complicated when she brings her quirky but charming assistant, Portia, along. Their getaway falls apart when Greg has to unexpectedly return to the United States for work, and Tanya begins to suspect he’s being unfaithful. As the days pass, she becomes increasingly anxious and paranoid.

Tanya develops a friendship with Quentin, a rich Englishman living in Palermo, but she quickly discovers he’s not who he seems. Warned by Portia that danger is coming, Tanya gets a gun from Niccolo—a man she had a brief encounter with—and uses it to kill everyone aboard Quentin’s yacht.

Tanya’s death was an accident, but the events leading up to it are puzzling. She believed Greg had hired Quentin and his team to try and kill her, and while she was often paranoid, she turned out to be correct this time. In the last episode of The White Lotus Season 2, Tanya tragically slipped and fell while trying to get into a small boat, hitting her head and ultimately drowning.

As a total TV junkie, I’ve noticed The White Lotus really loves building suspense. It throws all these different characters at you – seriously wealthy people, celebrities, the whole nine yards – but you quickly get the sense something’s off. There are definitely some shady figures lurking around that hotel. It’s interesting how Greg leaving just happens at the same time Quentin shows up… makes you wonder what’s going on, right?

The show deliberately leaves some things unexplained, like whether Harper and Cameron ever became intimate. This ambiguity adds to the intrigue and mystery. However, it’s clear that Greg and Quentin were definitely scheming to exploit Tanya.

Did Greg Try to Get Tanya Killed in The White Lotus?

Whether Greg intended to harm Tanya or not, his primary goal was always to obtain her money. He suddenly entered her life and began to charm her, exploiting her kindness by even pretending to be seriously ill to gain her sympathy.

By Season 2, he’s become a completely changed person. He’s cold, arrogant, and treats Tanya with disdain, clearly annoyed by Portia being along for the trip. This behavior hints at his plan to kill Tanya and claim her fortune—Portia was an unexpected complication, and he’d have to deal with her as well.

Greg might not have wanted Tanya harmed at all. Instead, he could have been trying to blackmail her for money. His plan may have been to arrange a sexual encounter between Tanya and Niccolo, record it, and then use that recording to cancel their prenuptial agreement, allowing him to easily get a financial settlement from Tanya.

While Greg’s true intentions aren’t always clear, he’s the only character who shows up throughout all three seasons of the show. This surprisingly makes him a central figure – maybe even the main villain. It’s possible the writers originally intended Greg to be a tragically ill romantic interest in the first season of The White Lotus and later changed his character to a greedy, older man.

Honestly, I think Greg’s return in Season 3 of The White Lotus really cemented him as the central figure of the whole show – he’s the one character everything seems to revolve around. A lot of us were expecting him to try and ruin Belinda, maybe even something really awful, but she actually turned the tables on him with some clever blackmail! Still, the fact that they’re keeping him around feels like a big clue that Greg…

How Tanya’s Death Impacted The White Lotus Season 3

Even though Tanya dies in Season 2, the mystery surrounding her death is central to the plot. The season begins with a dramatic scene of gunfire, shown through the eyes of Belinda’s son, Zion. And, as viewers have come to expect, the season ends with another shocking murder.

Okay, as a huge fan, let me tell you, Season 3 had me stressed about Belinda! Just like with Tanya last season, I was constantly worried she was in danger. That Greg is seriously creepy, and Belinda quickly figured out who he was – she remembered him from the Hawaii White Lotus! As she started putting things together and realizing how Tanya really died, she got more and more convinced that Greg was going to come after her, and honestly, I was right there with her, fearing the same thing!

It was satisfying to see Tanya finally get what she deserved in The White Lotus, though it felt a bit off that Belinda ended up helping her again, even indirectly. The story takes a surprising twist when Zion encourages Belinda to stand up to Greg – she likely would have confronted him eventually, but Zion sped things up.

Greg tries to bribe Belinda with $100,000 to keep quiet, but she and Zion team up to con him out of $5 million. This makes up for the disappointing end Belinda faced in Season 1 of The White Lotus, where Tanya initially seemed interested in funding her wellness business. After building Belinda’s hopes, Tanya ultimately gave her only a few hundred dollars before leaving.

In the end, Belinda gets even with Greg by blackmailing him, allowing her to leave Thailand with enough money to pursue her own ventures. However, the story comes full circle when Belinda betrays her partner, Pornchai, repeating the same hurtful behavior she experienced with Tanya. Pornchai had been relying on her to start a wellness business together, but Belinda abandons him to pursue her own goals.

Everything We Know About The White Lotus Season 4

Belinda’s story seemed to wrap up completely, so it’s doubtful she’ll be back. The show has been renewed for a fourth season, which will take place in Europe. Filming will center around the Château de La Messardière, a beautiful 19th-century palace and luxury hotel in Saint-Tropez.

The show has announced a few cast members for the upcoming season, including Helena Bonham Carter, AJ Michalka, Steve Coogan, Sandra Bernhard, and Alexander Ludwig. The addition of several French actors strongly suggests the next season will take place in France. While more cast announcements are expected, the fact that they haven’t happened yet indicates the show is still some time away from being released.

Look, let’s be real, Tanya’s gone and that’s a huge loss for the show. But even though she’s not around, her impact will definitely be felt throughout the rest of the story. What really struck me was how her death, and the questions surrounding Greg, peeled back the layers of this beautiful resort to reveal some truly ugly stuff – greed, people using each other, and a real breakdown of morals. It was a brilliant way to expose the darkness beneath the surface. Honestly, after that finale, I’m already counting down the days until Season 4 to see just how far they’ll push the boundaries of wealth and excess. Bring on the depravity!
