Okay, so I’m hearing that when Apple finally releases a foldable iPhone – which feels like it’s been forever coming – it might not have Touch ID. Apparently, they’re ditching the fingerprint scanner altogether, which is kinda surprising considering how long we’ve all used it for security and stuff. It’ll be interesting to see if Face ID is enough on a folding phone!
A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone won’t have Face ID. Instead, it will use a fingerprint sensor built into the power button to unlock the device.
So, apparently the reason the next iPhone Fold might not have Face ID is because of how incredibly thin they’re making it! Mark Gurman says the front part of the phone – the bit where Face ID usually goes – is just too slim to fit all the necessary tech for it to work. It’s a bummer, but I guess they’re prioritizing a super sleek design!
Unlike recent iPhones that have a pill-shaped notch, the upcoming foldable phone is predicted to use a small, circular hole to house the front-facing camera and Face ID technology.
According to reports, the new device will have Touch ID built into the power button on the side, just like some iPad models already do.
Plus, according to Gurman, even though the foldable iPhone won’t have the traditional notch, it will still include Apple’s Dynamic Island – a feature that shows you live alerts and what’s currently happening on your phone.
The report suggests the device might look like two iPhone Airs joined together, hinting at Apple’s commitment to a very slim design, much like the iPhone Air expected to launch in September 2025.

iPad-style interface and multitasking features reported
In addition to physical changes, the upcoming foldable iPhone is predicted to have a redesigned interface specifically for its bigger inner screen. According to reports, it will feature a layout similar to the iPad, letting users run two apps at the same time. However, apps made for existing iPads won’t be compatible with this new device.
Apple is apparently redesigning its main apps with a sidebar on the left to make better use of the bigger screens on newer devices.
Developers will have the ability to optimize iPhone apps to better fit the larger screen of the foldable device, making them feel more like native iPad apps.
The report indicates the device will feature an outer display around the size of a smaller iPhone. Inside, the screen will be wider than it is tall, resembling the original Pixel Fold’s display, and differ from the more square screens found on newer foldables like the Pixel Fold 10 or Galaxy Z Fold 7.
However, the iPhone Fold is expected to be expensive, potentially costing around $2,000 when it’s revealed in September, according to Gurman.
Last December, YouTuber Jon Prosser shared a video that appeared to showcase Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone. He predicts it could be released in September 2026, at the same time as the iPhone 18 Pro.
