Green Lantern will return in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie, but it won’t be the version many fans remember. As James Gunn prepares to start filming the Superman sequel – scheduled for release in 2027 – several returning actors will join David Corenswet as Superman. The Superman films are central to the new DC Universe planned by DC Studios, and this latest casting suggests another major crossover event is in the works.
Though fans first met Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner in Superman, the new series Man of Tomorrow will feature a different Green Lantern. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart, continuing his role from the upcoming HBO series Lanterns.
For those familiar with DC Comics, many characters have been Green Lantern. The upcoming series, Lanterns, will explore this, focusing on John Stewart learning the ropes from a more experienced Lantern, Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. Nathan Fillion will also be in the series as Gardner.

I’m really excited to hear Pierre will be in another DCU movie, Man of Tomorrow! It sounds like Lanterns will tell us how he becomes Green Lantern, setting him up to be a major player in the next Superman film. So far, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl is the only other Justice League member confirmed to be back for the sequel, which is great news!
The upcoming movie, Man of Tomorrow, will feature Superman (played by David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) teaming up against a new enemy, Brainiac (played by Lars Eidinger). James Gunn, who heads DC Studios, is writing and directing the film, which is currently scheduled to be released on July 9, 2027.
Man of Tomorrow Gets A New Green Lantern
Pierre’s first role in the DC Universe since Lanterns, playing Man of Tomorrow, hints at a promising future for the actor within the franchise.
DC Studios has been careful about introducing the Justice League right away, but with new Supergirl and Green Lantern projects coming out this year, it looks like they’re starting to build towards the team’s formation. The choice of actor, Pierre, for the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film—instead of Fillion or Chandler—suggests that DC Studios intends for John Stewart to be the main Green Lantern in their universe. This likely means Pierre’s version of the character will be a key member if and when a Justice League team is assembled.
It’s still unknown what James Gunn intends to do with Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern character, and whether he and another Green Lantern could both appear in the upcoming Superman movie. There’s also uncertainty about what might happen to Guy Gardner in the Lanterns series that could prevent Fillion from reprising the role with the Justice League.
Bringing Pierre’s Green Lantern character into the Man of Tomorrow project is a great example of how the DC Universe is connecting its stories. DC Studios seems to be building its cinematic universe more visibly and strategically than Marvel did when it first started, but they’re still carefully planning how everything fits together.
Guest appearances by characters like Peacemaker (John Cena), Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), and members of the Justice League have started to link the different DC Universe projects together – including Superman, Creature Commandos, and Season 2 of Peacemaker. However, the casting of Pierre in Superman 2 officially connects the storylines of Lanterns and Man of Tomorrow for the first time.
