Kevin Williamson confirms he won’t direct Scream 8 and has disappointing sequel update

Kevin Williamson, who directed the most recent Scream film, won’t be directing the next one, and he doesn’t have good news about whether it will even happen.

In Scream 7, Sidney Prescott—the original survivor—must protect her daughter, Tatum, from a new Ghostface who claims to be Stu Macher. This killer uses artificial intelligence to torment the Prescott family with a terrifying and violent spree.

Despite receiving very negative reviews from critics – earning only a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes – the seventh installment in the horror series has been a financial success, grossing over $151 million globally. This shows that the popularity of the Ghostface character and the franchise itself is stronger than the critical backlash.

Although Kevin Williamson has been involved in every ‘Scream’ movie – even writing four of them – he won’t be directing the eighth film. He also says that the sequel is still some time away from being released.

Kevin Williamson says “no one is talking about” Scream 8 yet

So, I just heard from Williamson himself that he’s not directing the next Scream movie. He’s taking a break from directing, and honestly, it sounds like Scream 8 isn’t even being seriously discussed right now. It’s a little disappointing, but he needs to do what’s best for him!

He shared that he has some thoughts on the future of the franchise, but is excited to see what another creative person might bring to it, and hopes the opportunity arises. He expressed his enjoyment of being involved with the ‘Scream’ series, clarifying that he doesn’t need to be the main focus, and is happy to let others take the lead in writing or directing.

Williamson said he’s optimistic about a potential Scream 8, though he claims no one is currently discussing it. However, this isn’t entirely accurate – he actually revealed in February that he and Neve Campbell had already talked about a possible eighth film while working on the next Scream movie, scheduled for 2026.

He explained to Deadline that while filming late one night, they started brainstorming ideas for a potential eighth ‘Scream’ movie. Neve Campbell had a particularly good suggestion that everyone liked. If this current film is successful and fans want more, they’re open to continuing the series and delivering what the audience wants.

Neve Campbell recently shared a playful idea for the next Scream movie with TopMob. While responding to fan discussions, she jokingly suggested that her co-star Courteney Cox’s character, Gale Weathers, could be a suspect in the next installment.

“She does happen to show up every time… That should be suspect! What’s that about?” the star said.
