Age of Attraction’s ‘Promise Room’ Is As Creepy As It Sounds

Just when you thought Netflix was done with dating shows, they’ve released another one! Following the success of Love Is Blind, Age of Attraction introduces a new group of singles who are willing to date people much older or younger than themselves. The show is hosted by age-gap couple and podcast hosts, Nick Viall and Natalie Joy.

Okay, so the premise of this show? It’s pretty familiar territory. Basically, a bunch of people date around in this camp-like setting, and eventually start pairing off. The interesting twist is this ‘Promise Room.’ You find someone you click with, you bring them in there, and you both reveal your ages. Then, you decide if you want to keep things going. They introduce this room right away – it’s like this treehouse with a red room inside, and there are these gold rings sitting there. You don’t actually have to promise to marry anyone, but if you decide to couple up, you do have to wear the promise ring. It’s a commitment, but not necessarily a lifelong one, you know?

Okay, so I was immediately hooked on this show when Theresa and John were the first couple to enter the ‘Promise Room.’ Theresa’s a mom of three, and honestly, her biggest hope was that John was over 30. Big disappointment – he turned out to be younger than her oldest child! They revealed he’s 27, and presented her with a gold ring (which, poor Theresa, didn’t go with her silver jewelry). She’s 54, so you can imagine her reaction! Despite the significant age gap – and that’s really what this show is all about – they both decided to accept each other’s rings and see where things go. They genuinely seem to connect, and I’m already getting Cameron and Lauren vibes from Age of Attraction – could be a really interesting pairing!

With the growing popularity of temporary partner relationships (TPR), the awkwardness of exchanging fake wedding rings is becoming apparent. During a ring exchange, 22-year-old Libby and 38-year-old Andrew were both surprised when Libby playfully suggested Andrew was proposing. She jokingly expressed her surprise at his age, admitting she had expected someone much younger. Andrew was speechless when Libby revealed her own age. Despite the surprise, they both decided to continue their temporary relationship as planned.

There was a rejection in the “Promise Room.” West, age 30, offered Joleen, 38, a promise ring, but she turned it down before finding out how old he was. He then suggested they could simply live together for fun, without a serious commitment, but Joleen explained that was precisely why she wasn’t interested. West took the ring back and then awkwardly tried to explain to a 48-year-old woman that being 30 isn’t the same as being 25.

The current season of the show has shifted away from the hopeful tone of its first season. It now feels more like a blend of the dramatic storylines of 90 Day Fiancé and the later, more sensational seasons of Love Is Blind. As the couples begin living together, they’ll meet each other’s friends and family, putting their relationships to the test. It’s a crucial step, though arguably less intense than introducing someone you’re already engaged to – especially when that engagement followed a short period of dating and a promise ring exchange.
