The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has responded to a strange rumor circulating online. It claims a man in Florida reported being kidnapped by dolphins and made to assist them in constructing an underwater city.
Despite being intelligent, dolphins aren’t capable of capturing people and forcing them to build an underwater city. That’s just a myth!
In early March 2026, a false story began circulating online claiming that Lee County deputies found a man on the beach who was wet, dehydrated, and sketching plans in the sand.
According to reports, a man claimed he was pulled underwater by a group of dolphins. He told authorities they took him to what he described as their home – a place 40 feet under the surface featuring structures resembling cities, towns, and even apartment buildings.
After supposedly assisting the dolphins for three days, they brought him back to the surface, but let him know they might need to help again in the future.
Although the man was clearly making things up, the fake news story about his outlandish claims to the police seemed believable enough to prompt an investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials poke fun at viral rumors of dolphins kidnapping man
On Friday, March 6th, the office responded to the strange story with a humorous Facebook post. They jokingly acknowledged the wild claims but clarified that it was all a fake created online.
Okay, so living in Lee County is amazing, seriously. But I’ve gotta say, nobody’s building houses underwater here yet, though I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes soon!
Our Underwater Construction Investigation Team looked into the matter, and the dolphins have stated they weren’t involved. Just to be clear, no dolphins were harmed while investigating this rumor.

A bizarre theft recently occurred in Florida: a man stole between $10,000 and $20,000 from a Disney Springs restaurant and fled using scuba equipment, quickly becoming a viral sensation.
