As a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I always felt At World’s End (2007) really wrapped up the original trilogy nicely. It was so satisfying to finally see the bad guys, Davy Jones and Lord Cutler Beckett, get what they deserved! And honestly, the movie features what I think is one of the greatest naval battles ever filmed – the fight between Davy Jones’ ship and The Black Pearl, during what they called the Battle of Calypso’s Maelstrom, was just incredible.
The Black Pearl and The Flying Dutchman are caught in a massive whirlpool, their sails colliding as the ships are pulled inward. Sailors from both crews fight hand-to-hand, swinging between the vessels while cannons blast. Meanwhile, Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones have an epic sword fight, and both the pirate fleet and the East India Trading Company ships prepare for a final, decisive battle – with the Company aiming to destroy all the pirates.
The Blacksmith Shop Fight Introduces the Audience to Two Major Characters
Most fans agree that the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Curse of the Black Pearl, is the strongest in the series. It’s a fantastic film that holds up even without the other movies, largely due to its well-developed characters and surprisingly dark plot for a Disney film. The story revolves around the crew of the Black Pearl, who stole cursed treasure and are slowly transforming into undead monsters, unable to experience any sensation. To break the curse and avoid eternal doom, they must recover all the stolen treasure, all while Captain Jack Sparrow tries to get his beloved ship, the Black Pearl, back.
The initial fight in Curse of the Black Pearl is a standout moment in the entire Pirates of the Caribbean series. When pirate Jack Sparrow enters blacksmith Will Turner’s shop, Will tries to fight him off with a sword he crafted. Though simpler than many later battles, this scene quickly establishes the complicated, often adversarial relationship between Will and Jack, and highlights their contrasting personalities – Will begins as the honorable one, while Jack is willing to do whatever it takes to win. It’s ironic because, as the series progresses, Jack proves to be the one with a good heart who consistently saves the day, while Will increasingly takes after his pirate father.
Jack’s Escape from Cannibal Island Highlights Jack’s Dumb Luck
The Cannibal Island sequence is filled with iconic moments from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. It features Jack Sparrow captured by a tribe who believe he’s a god, but their devotion comes with a terrifying catch: they intend to cook and eat him to free him from his body. When Will Turner and the crew of The Black Pearl arrive to rescue Jack, they find themselves fighting for their own lives as well.
Jack’s escape is classic Jack Sparrow – completely improvisational and relying on a series of daring, spur-of-the-moment decisions. He should have faced certain danger multiple times while fleeing the cannibals, but he consistently gets lucky. Even when his crew tries to abandon him to escape, he somehow manages to sneak back onto the Black Pearl before it’s too late.
Barbossa’s Port Royal Arrival is Nothing Short of Epic Piracy at Its Finest
To break the curse on Barbossa’s crew, they need the blood of a Turner. Originally, Bootstrap Bill Turner was one of them, but Barbossa exiled him to a watery, endless fate. This led Bootstrap to join the crew of The Flying Dutchman. Unable to reach Bootstrap himself, the crew sets its sights on his son.
Barbossa and his crew attack Port Royal, determined to find the last part of the stolen, cursed treasure. During the raid, they encounter Elizabeth Swann, who pretends to be Elizabeth Turner. Thinking she’s the daughter of Bootstrap Bill, the pirates kidnap her and take her onto The Black Pearl, where Barbossa imprisons her. Though this case of mistaken identity is somewhat humorous, it’s also an early and clear example of the piracy that drives the story.
The Saint Martin Bank Vault Robbery is the Only Scene in Movies 4 & 5 that Rivals the Original Trilogy
Most fans agree that the fourth and fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movies, On Stranger Tides (2011) and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), aren’t as good as the first three films. While Johnny Depp still delivers a strong performance as Jack Sparrow, these sequels don’t quite measure up. However, Dead Men Tell No Tales is noticeably better than On Stranger Tides, and features a particularly impressive action scene.
In a memorable scene from the Saint Martin bank robbery, Jack Sparrow and the crew of The Black Pearl attempt to steal a gold vault by hooking it up to a horse-drawn carriage. Instead of simply pulling the vault out, the entire bank building is ripped from its foundations and dragged through the streets! The chaos includes Jack Sparrow falling out of the vault with a woman and a heap of gold. This action sequence stands out as one of the most genuinely exciting moments in the later Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Davy Jones & His Kraken Sink The Black Pearl & Jack Sparrow Along With It
A particularly memorable action scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean series appears in Dead Man’s Chest. After Jack Sparrow can’t pay his debt to Davy Jones, Jones begins to pursue him and The Black Pearl aboard The Flying Dutchman. But Jones isn’t the only one after Jack – a shadowy force also hunts him because of a dark mark Jones placed on his hand. In one of the film’s final moments, Jack makes a desperate sacrifice, staying behind on The Black Pearl while his crew escapes in a small boat.
The kraken relentlessly attacks Jack’s ship, its enormous tentacles crashing down with enough power to destroy it. A huge mouth filled with massive, jagged teeth rises toward the deck, leaving Jack with no option but to fight the colossal creature using only his sword. The film’s ending – with the kraken seemingly devouring Jack and sinking his ship – remains a shockingly memorable moment in movie history. Audiences were horrified by what appeared to be the death of a beloved character, but it’s widely considered the most spectacular scene in the entire series.
