As a long-time Honkai: Star Rail player with countless hours spent grinding for resources and perfecting my team compositions, I can confidently say that Yunli is one of the most exciting characters to build around. Her massive damage output and ability to deal follow-up attacks make her an absolute powerhouse in the right team setup.
Yunli serves as the inaugural character with Physical Destruction abilities in Honkai: Star Rail, succeeding Clara and the Physical Trailblazer units that debuted at the game’s launch. Although there are many parallels between Yunli and Clara in terms of their kit components like follow-up attacks, self-healing, and aggression, she stands out by providing a unique mix of potent Ultimate skills and frequent follow-up attacks. This versatility makes her an indispensable addition to diverse team configurations, as players can either prioritize maximizing her Ultimate damage or exploiting her follow-up attack potential.
In light of this situation, this guide will primarily explore two strategies for her character: one aimed at maximizing energy production to transform her into a powerful hyper carry with optimal support, and the other concentrating on a dual DPS setup that emphasizes follow-up plays, effectively using various team members and enhancing Yunli’s build as much as possible.
Best Yunli Hypercarry Teams
In a setup primarily designed for Yunli, the strategy is to optimize her self-inflicted damage by frequently using her most powerful attack, her Ultimate. This team configuration usually includes characters who can replenish energy, boost abilities, or weaken opponents to keep Yunli primed for dealing immense damage as regularly as possible.
Premium Team: Yunli + Tingyun + Sparkle + Huohuo
The best team compositions for Yunli should ideally include characters that provide valuable buffs and generate energy. In this regard, Tingyun and Huohuo are excellent choices. Both characters can consistently generate energy for Yunli without the need to worry about overcapping, as Yunli can use her Ultimate before reaching 240 energy. Additionally, Tingyun and Huohuo offer ATK buffs, enhancing Yunli’s maximum DPS output and providing more flexibility in her build options, such as choosing a Physical DMG Planar Sphere over an ATK one, or prioritizing ATK over an Energy Regeneration Rate (ERR) rope.
In the last team position, players have greater leeway to pick their characters. Among the strong picks, Sparkle stands out due to her substantial Critical Damage boost, aid in Skill point regeneration, and enhancement of Yunli’s Ultimate. This can be particularly advantageous for activating Tingyun’s and Huohuo’s Ultimates more often. However, if Sparkle is unavailable, alternative support characters like Bronya, who can increase damage output and offer useful abilities such as advance forward and Critical Damage boost, or debuff units that lower the enemy’s defense, are equally effective choices.
Budget (F2P) Team: Yunli + Tingyun + Pela + Lynx
Instead of the current team setup that works well for Yunli as a hypercarry, which features characters like Sparkle and Huohuo (who are resource-heavy, especially for free players), there are more budget-friendly options available. Pela can be substituted for Sparkle, offering a robust debuff unit with SP efficiency and contributing notably to the team’s damage by lowering enemy defenses. In place of Huohuo, consider using Lynx as a healer; while it doesn’t provide energy for the team like Huohuo does, it offers unique utility that can still contribute significantly to the team composition.
As a fan, I’d put it like this: When using Lynx, I find the Survival Response ability to be quite advantageous for both Destruction and Preservation units. This boosts the aggression (aggro) these roles generate, which is crucial because it triggers Yunli’s follow-up damage more frequently. This keeps Yunli effective even in teams where resources aren’t plentiful.
Best Yunli Duo-DPS Follow-Up Oriented Teams
An alternative strategy involves maximizing Yunli’s rapid follow-up attack capability to increase the overall damage output of the team. This approach works best when Yunli is teamed with characters who also have high DPS and follow-up attack abilities. For optimal results, consider using the Duran, Dynasty of Running Wolves weapon for Yunli or another team member. Premium characters are often ideal for this strategy, but F2P players can still create effective teams with more common units.
As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I find that the follow-up attack strategy can be quite powerful, especially in games like Pure Fiction. However, it can also be effectively applied to Memory of Chaos (MoC) with some tweaks to character selection. Here are two team compositions that have proven successful for endgame content:
Pure Fiction Team: Yunli + Jade + Robin + Aventurine
In a Fictional Scenario, where battles often involve multiple rounds of lesser opponents, it’s advantageous to combine Yunli with Jade. This pair consistently inflicts substantial damage due to their mutually beneficial abilities. Robin is an ideal support character for the team, as she amplifies overall damage, controls the turn order, and boosts the effectiveness of follow-up attacks thanks to her unique set of skills.
For the sustain slot, Aventurine is a strong team member, offering enemy debuffs, ally buffs, and shields, along with the ability to trigger follow-up attacks. His presence not only provides additional survivability but also contributes to the team’s offensive capabilities. However, given that Yunli can heal herself and Pure Fiction doesn’t typically demand as much survivability as MoC, players might opt for a different character. March 7th’s new form, Imaginary Hunt, could be a viable alternative, providing synergies that decrease the team’s overall reliance on premium characters. This setup offers flexibility and maintains high damage output while being more accessible to players with fewer limited characters.
Memory of Chaos Team: Yunli + Topaz + Robin + Huohuo
Compared to Pure Fiction scenarios, MoC often features fewer waves with tougher opponents. In these situations, Topaz proves a better secondary DPS option alongside Yunli than Jade, due to her focus on single-target damage and the buffs she provides for follow-up attacks. This complements Yunli’s strengths well. Additionally, Robin continues to be an outstanding support choice because of her ability to boost overall team damage, increase turn efficiency, and enhance follow-up attack power – all of which are particularly valuable in the more demanding MoC battles.
For the sustain slot, Huohuo is a strong choice for duo-DPS comps as well, offering team-wide healing and energy regeneration, which helps to maintain a steady flow of Ultimates. This capability is particularly valuable in MoC, where survival and burst damage can be critical. Aventurine is still a higly viable option if players have access to him, but not to Huohuo. For more budget friendly options, Lynx and Imaginary Hunt March 7th can once again serve as effective replacements for more premium characters like Topaz or Huohuo.
