A band of House Republicans is threatening to torpedo a bipartisan Senate housing bill unless lawmakers swap a temporary CBDC ban for a permanent one, because apparently, the future of money is a battleground for ideological purity.
The dispute revolves around the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a Senate proposal that slaps a 10-year moratorium on the Federal Reserve’s CBDC plans. But the Republicans, ever the champions of fiscal freedom, insist that 10 years is too short for a system that could, you know, exist.
Why Are These Lawmakers Insisting on a Permanent CBDC Ban?
Enter the 18-member Republican faction, who’ve apparently forgotten that the 21st century is already here. They’re so terrified of a digital dollar that they’re willing to sink a housing bill to stop it. Because nothing says “I care about families” like obstructing affordable housing for the sake of a hypothetical surveillance state.
Their argument? Privacy! Or, as they put it, “unelected bureaucrats” will track your coffee purchases and tax your groceries. Because nothing says “liberty” like a government that can’t even manage your Netflix account.
I’m proud to sign onto a letter urging House and Senate leadership to permanently ban a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
Americans deserve financial freedom, not government-controlled money.

They claim a CBDC would let the government “track transactions, restrict disfavored activity, or cut citizens off from the financial system.” Which, if true, would make the IRS look like a benevolent uncle. But hey, at least they’re consistent-every crisis is a conspiracy, every innovation a threat.
“A CBDC is essentially a digital dollar issued and controlled by the Federal Reserve. Unlike cash, it could allow the government to track transactions and monitor how Americans spend their money,” Reps. Ralph Norman wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Because nothing says “trust us” like a system that’s literally a digital ledger. The Republicans want a permanent ban, not because they’re worried about privacy, but because they’re terrified of a world where money isn’t a commodity they can manipulate with a wink and a nod.
“The House already passed legislation to permanently ban a CBDC. The Senate must amend the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act with STRONGER language before sending any bill to the House. A permanent prohibition is the ONLY way to protect Americans’ privacy and liberty,” Norman added.
Meanwhile, the GOP is grumbling about delays. Because nothing’s more important than a CBDC ban, right? They’re like a toddler throwing a tantrum over a snack, only with more congressional power and fewer snacks.
The clash highlights a wider policy split over how the US should respond to state-backed digital currency efforts abroad. But let’s be honest-China’s digital yuan is just a fancy way to say “we’re better at socialism than you.”
Critics of a permanent ban argue that such a step would put Washington on a different path from other major economies, including China and the euro zone. Which is a problem, because nothing says “I’m a global leader” like refusing to keep up with the times.
Indeed, the People’s Bank of China is actively deploying its digital yuan, while the European Central Bank is advancing work on a digital euro. But hey, if the US can’t keep up, maybe it’s time to stop pretending we’re the center of the universe.
