Fans will soon have a chance to play a hidden gem – a game that never got the attention it deserved from this popular series.
Bandai Namco just announced that Pokémon Plakoro, a classic and somewhat forgotten Pokémon game, is making a comeback. The new trailer shows players engaging in fast-paced dice battles with a diverse range of Pokémon, like Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander, Bulbasaur, Eevee, and Mew.
Pokémon Plakoro Returns for the First Time Since 1997
The first six sets of Pokémon Plakoro will feature the Pokémon previously mentioned and are planned to release in July. The game is played on a unique playmat where players roll a Charakoro – a Pokémon-shaped die – to trigger various effects. They also roll customizable Enekoro energy dice to power up their Pokémon’s attacks and special moves.
The Pokémon Plakoro starter sets will each cost about $7, and individual Taken Box packs will be around $3. A larger expansion box with new chips, move cards, and Charakoro featuring Pokémon like Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres will be available for approximately $17.
Pokémon Plakoro first came out in 1997 and quickly gained a dedicated, though relatively small, following. Despite being a potentially great game for young Pokémon fans, it remained exclusive to Japan, which limited its wider appeal. Between 1997 and 1998, several Pokémon Plakoro sets were released, featuring almost 50 different Pokémon.
In addition to the expected return of Plakoro, Pokémon fans have a new game to anticipate: Wind & Waves. Revealed on Pokémon Day 2026, this tenth generation of mainline Pokémon games will be the first full adventure on the new Switch 2 console, taking place in a tropical setting.
The new Pokémon Winds & Waves game will feature many new Pokémon. Among them are Browt, a Grass-type Pokémon resembling a bean sprout with a stern look, and Pombon, a cheerful Fire-type Pokémon that looks like a puppy. Players will also meet Gecqua, an intelligent Water-type gecko known for its focused expression.
Fans will have to wait at least a year for the release of Winds & Waves, but they’re keeping busy in the meantime. A new game launching on March 5th allows players to control a Ditto disguised as a human, exploring a vibrant world filled with Pokémon to collect and diverse environments to discover. Players can build, craft, and befriend Pokémon as they journey through this colorful landscape.
