Daryl Hannah Defends Herself From Love Story Portrayal

Daryl Hannah, known for her role in Splash and a past relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., has criticized a recent TV series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, for its portrayal of her. In an opinion piece for the New York Times, Hannah explains that the show includes a character based on her, depicted as annoying and unpleasant. She argues this wasn’t a coincidence, pointing out that a producer described her character as an obstacle to the central love story. Hannah objects to being used as a plot device, stating that real people shouldn’t be manipulated for narrative purposes and questioning whether portraying one woman negatively to elevate another constitutes misogyny.

Dree Hemingway plays Hannah on the show. According to creator Per Jacobson, a key aim of the series is to show Hannah’s comfort and knowledge of the social circles Carolyn is unfamiliar with. However, Hannah herself has expressed disagreement with several plot points. She clarifies that she’s never used cocaine, thrown drug-fueled parties, pressured anyone into getting married, damaged family heirlooms, interfered with private memorials, leaked stories to the media, or made insensitive comparisons, such as linking Jacqueline Onassis’ death to the loss of a pet.

Hannah explains that the show has already negatively affected her life. She’s received hateful and threatening messages from viewers who mistakenly believe the show’s depiction of events is true. She points out that using a real person’s name in fictional entertainment can damage their reputation, and concludes with a hopeful wish for love and honesty to win out.
