Many DC fans were disappointed by the initial ‘Lanterns‘ teaser, finding it lacked the expected superpowers and costumes. However, a new and unsettling theory about the villain could explain why the show is taking a more realistic approach.
The new HBO series is set in the DC Universe, sharing the same world as the recent Superman movie, the Peacemaker show, and this year’s Clayface film. It centers on Hal Jordan, an experienced Green Lantern, as he mentors a new recruit, John Stewart. Their training is interrupted when they become involved in a puzzling mystery in a small Nebraska town.
The trailer received some negative feedback from fans because it didn’t feature the signature green energy constructs created by the Lantern rings. Also, the only costume shown was a fairly dull brown and black design.
Viewers previously saw Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern played by Nathan Fillion, fully utilize his abilities in ‘Superman.’ However, a new fan theory suggests a disturbing explanation for why the Green Lanterns in the new series seem to be holding back and aren’t using their full power or traditional costumes.
Lanterns fan theory suggests the small town is a prison for brainwashed villains
The teaser’s ambiguity immediately sparked discussion and theories among DC fans. One popular idea is that the town depicted is actually a prison created by the Green Lantern Corps to hold powerful and dangerous enemies.
A DC Comics fan shared on Threads that a new story involves Green Lantern Hal Jordan and his trainee, John Stewart, investigating a series of murders in a small Nebraska town. The investigation leads them to a shocking discovery: one of the victims is Alan Scott, the very first Green Lantern, who used to be the town’s warden. Considering Alan Scott first appeared in comics in 1940, fans are excited about the potential of seeing him alongside both Hal and John in this storyline.
The idea was that the town wasn’t a normal place – it was a hidden prison created by The Guardians to contain their most dangerous foes. These prisoners weren’t just locked up, they’d also had their minds altered. However, things were beginning to unravel, and they were starting to regain their memories and awareness.
This explains why Hal and John aren’t conspicuously traveling to Nebraska in bright green gear, creating noticeable green objects. Doing so would likely alert any villains who were secretly under mind control.

Details released by HBO about the show’s characters seem to support this idea. Paul Ben-Victor, known for his roles in The Wire and The Irishman, will play Antaan, an alien character driven by a desire to reveal the truth and get revenge on those who harmed his people.
There’s a rumor that Ben-Victor will be playing Atrocitus, the Red Lantern, but this hasn’t been officially confirmed. HBO has also been keeping details about other characters under wraps, such as Chris Coy’s Waylon Sanders, who is described as a cautious truck driver and a resourceful man with a hidden identity.
Garret Dillahunt plays William Macon, a contemporary cowboy who seems like a charming, upstanding guy, but is actually ruthless and driven by his own hidden ambitions. He believes in conspiracy theories and presents a carefully constructed, appealing image to the world.
