If you take a well-loved science fiction film, famous for its intense action and dark comedy, and remake it while removing all of its sharp social critiques, you end up with a hollow imitation of the original – and you can now watch it for free online.
Perhaps that’s a little strong, but this 2014 remake doesn’t really compare favorably to the 1987 original. The original was a fun blend of humor, action, and over-the-top violence, while the remake took itself much more seriously and aimed for realism, losing much of what made the first film so enjoyable.
The new RoboCop remake didn’t receive a warm reception, with critics giving it a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes – much lower than the original’s 88%. Viewers also reacted negatively, dropping the audience score from 84% to just 49%. While most weren’t fans, if you’re curious or want to watch without paying, the remake is now available to stream for free on Tubi.
‘RoboCop’ Did Feature One Epic Scene That People Still Talk About
The original RoboCop tells the story of Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), a police officer in a bleak, futuristic Detroit controlled by powerful corporations. After being violently killed by Clarence Boddicker and his crew, Murphy is rebuilt as a cyborg, but he has no recollection of his past life.
In this new version of the story, Detroit police officer Murphy (played by Joel Kinnaman) is killed in a car bombing and rebuilt as a cyborg. Unlike the original film, this version allows him to retain all of his memories, including those of his wife and son. While a significant departure from the source material, this change is arguably the most compelling aspect of the remake.
About halfway through the 2014 film, Murphy, now completely transformed into a cyborg, breaks free. The moment he’s recaptured and brought before Dr. Dennett Norton (played by Gary Oldman), the film delivers a striking visual reveal – thanks to impressive CGI – of what remains of Murphy. Many would argue this single scene is the only truly good part of the remake.
Another ‘RoboCop’ Is on the Way (But It’s Not What You Think)

Sony Pictures Releasing
A new RoboCop film was once in development with director Neill Blomkamp around 2018, but those plans didn’t move forward. After Amazon bought MGM in 2022, they started looking for valuable properties to develop, and RoboCop was reportedly among their top choices, along with other projects.
Deadline reported that Amazon was strongly considering reviving the sci-fi RoboCop franchise with a new movie or TV series. This was confirmed in 2024 with the announcement of a RoboCop TV show in development at Amazon. Peter Ocko (known for Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies) will be running the show, and James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) will executive produce.
