Though now known for his large-scale, complex films, Christopher Nolan began his career like many filmmakers – with small, independent projects. His debut feature, the 1998 thriller Following, was a low-budget, black-and-white film that looks very different from the movies he makes today. Despite costing only a few thousand dollars to produce, it established him as a unique and unconventional storyteller.
Two years later, Nolan created a truly groundbreaking film. He wrote and directed it himself, basing it on a short story called Memento Mori by his brother, Jonathan. Memento was a nearly flawless crime thriller that felt fresh and original because of how its story was told, although Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction had already experimented with similar techniques a few years earlier.
Even after over 25 years, Memento stands out as one of Christopher Nolan’s most original films. It takes the familiar revenge story and tells it in a strikingly unconventional way, showcasing Nolan’s desire to break from tradition. While innovative, this approach initially confused many viewers. The film’s trailer offered only glimpses of exciting scenes, leading most people to enter the mystery without realizing how complicated the story’s timeline actually was.
A Fractured Revenge Journey Like No Other
Okay, let me tell you about Memento. It’s a seriously unique film, largely thanks to Christopher Nolan’s brilliant script and the way he decided to tell the story backwards. The movie actually starts with the climax – Leonard, played by Guy Pearce, killing Teddy, believing he was involved in his wife’s death. Then, as the story unfolds in reverse, we learn Leonard has this incredibly rare form of amnesia. He can’t form new memories or recall the past, so he’s forced to rely on tattoos and Polaroids to piece together the case. It’s a really fascinating and disorienting experience, and it completely pulls you into Leonard’s perspective.
As the movie unfolds, it becomes clear that Leonard is being used by Teddy for some kind of deal. While he might have already avenged his wife’s death, it’s hard to know what’s true because Leonard’s memories are so unreliable. The photos and tattoos he collects only make things more confusing.
Leonard’s story, which initially appears to be about revenge (but has deeper layers), ultimately loops back to the very beginning of the timeline, resolving many mysteries. Within the crime thriller genre, Memento stands alone – Christopher Nolan’s innovative film demonstrated his remarkable talent for storytelling.
Nolan Proved His Prowess in Small Scale
After directing hits like The Dark Knight and Inception, Christopher Nolan has become one of the most powerful filmmakers in Hollywood. He’s proven he can draw audiences to original stories, so studios readily agree to his requests. Whether it’s using IMAX cameras, shooting on film, or assembling a huge cast, he consistently gets what he needs to bring his vision to life.

Just because Christopher Nolan now makes large-budget films doesn’t mean he can’t succeed with smaller projects. Films like Following and The Prestige demonstrate that. Memento showed he could really push boundaries with a clever thriller that broke some screenwriting rules, but still stayed focused. Memento‘s success proves that Nolan doesn’t need a massive budget to make a great movie—a strong script is all he needs.
You might need to watch it a couple of times to catch all the details, but the good news is this revenge thriller is now available to stream on HBO Max. Watch it once, twice, or however many times you like!
