How School Spirits Season 3 Ending Twist Will Impact Season 4 Addressed By Creators

School Spirits season 4 will be significantly impacted by the show’s latest twist.

The third season ended with a flurry of surprises, continuing a pattern of big reveals throughout the eight episodes. While Simon has returned to the real world, it’s discovered that the villain, Alfred, has taken over the body of Maddie’s mother, Sandra. And to top it off, the protective barrier is now failing.

Oliver Goldstick, Megan Trinrud, and Nate Trinrud, the show’s executive producers, recently spoke with TV Insider about questions fans have been asking. Nate Trinrud explained they can’t share details, but stressed that the idea of freedom within the show is complex and isn’t straightforward.

Megan pointed out that if life were simple for the characters, they’d just be able to walk away and do as they pleased. Goldstick added that this season delved into what would happen if the ghosts reconnected with family and loved ones they hadn’t seen in years.

We can’t reveal specific details right now. However, if you watch the show, you’ll notice we really enjoy creating complex situations. Things are rarely straightforward, and true ease is hard to come by.

Megan Trinrud: Then they could all just leave or do whatever they want.

This season, we discussed how the characters might interact with people from their past – family and loved ones they haven’t seen in a long time – and how that could even happen. The finale lets us consider what it’s like to reconnect with someone after 40 years. Not everyone returns to their old school, so these ghosts have been missing out on important relationships and the chance to resolve issues, and we’ll finally get to see those stories unfold.

Megan notes that the town of Split River probably feels huge and daunting to the characters of School Spirits, considering they’ve been stuck inside a building for decades. She also shares her excitement about how this change in setting will impact the story going forward.

Megan Trinrud believes that even the town of Split River will feel like a huge new world to the characters, especially after being confined to a single building for so long. Just the ability to move around town will likely be overwhelming for them. The team is eager to portray the experience of people who have been essentially imprisoned for over forty years and are suddenly given their freedom.

Have you ever tried to return something to a store, only to find out it’s gone out of business? That’s the kind of frustrating situation Oliver Goldstick is talking about.

Megan Trinrud: Yeah, everything’s different. Everything’s different.

Nate Trinrud: Those library book dues are going to be crazy.

Megan Trinrud: The world has changed.

Oliver Goldstick: There’s no more Macy’s. What happened to Macy’s? Where was I?

This season, some of the ghosts have started questioning if they even want to move on, like Wally. In episode seven, he admitted to Rhonda that he actually enjoys being a ghost. We haven’t really seen how each ghost feels about staying versus moving on – we just assume they’d choose to move on. But maybe they don’t. With a wider world now open to them, their feelings about staying might be changing.

Megan explains that the characters would need to determine how Alfred’s plan unfolds, likely at the start of a possible fourth season. Nate points out the episode ends with a few days passing, and those unseen events could definitely influence the story moving forward.

As a fan, I’m really curious to see how they’ll address that when – hopefully – they start working on Season 4. It feels like a key thing they’ll need to sort out early on.

At the end of the episode, we purposefully show a few days passing. This leaves things open, so anything could happen during that time.

While a fourth season of School Spirits hasn’t been officially announced, there’s good reason to believe it might happen. The show was very popular on Paramount+ when it first came out, especially among fans of teen dramas. Recently, it’s gained even more viewers thanks to being available on Netflix as well.

It seems likely Alfred will become a more significant villain if the show gets renewed. Placing him in Maddie’s life through her mother, especially given their difficult relationship, will create drama and change the dynamics of School Spirits.
