Resident Evil Requiem Hatchet – how to Sharpen, Upgrade, & Parry

The Hatchet is a useful melee weapon in Resident Evil Requiem, and you can improve its effectiveness by sharpening and upgrading it – it even lets you deflect attacks! This guide will explain exactly how to sharpen your Hatchet, what upgrades are available, how much they cost, and how to use it to parry. Let’s get started!

Resident Evil Requiem Hatchet Guide – How Do You Sharpen, Upgrade, and Parry?

Firstly, to sharpen your Hatchet, just press the following button combination:

  • LB + X – Xbox
  • L1 + Square – PlayStation
  • E – PC
  • L + Y – Nintendo Switch 2

Keeping your hatchet sharp is important for two reasons. First, it lets you deflect enemy attacks and avoid getting hurt. Second, you need a sharp hatchet to open Warped Doors. Luckily, Leon can sharpen his hatchet as many times as needed without any penalty.

Using your Hatchet – whether you’re attacking enemies or blocking attacks – causes it to wear down. You can check its condition by looking at the green bar next to the Hatchet icon on the bottom right of your screen.

Constantly maintaining your Hatchet can be difficult, particularly during fights. Luckily, players have the option to upgrade it instead.

In Resident Evil Requiem, you can improve your Hatchet by purchasing upgrades from Supply Boxes. The Hatchet can be upgraded a total of four times.

Upgrade Upgrade Cost Upgraded Stat
Fortified Blade 5,000 Credits 2.5 Power (formerly 1.8)
Improved Grip 3,000 Credits 3.3 Durability (formerly 2.5)
Fortified Blade + 8,000 Credits 3.3 Power (formerly 2.5, originally 1.8)
Improved Grip + 6,000, Credits 4 Durability (formerly 3.3, originally 2.5)

Upgrading the Hatchet completely will significantly boost its damage – about double – and make it around 60% more durable. While you don’t have to get every upgrade, I suggest getting the basic ones, as they’ll be really helpful during a specific boss battle later in the game.

Now that we know how to sharpen the Hatchet, how do we use it?

How to Parry With the Hatchet & Other Uses

To block attacks with Leon’s Hatchet, press the designated button just as a zombie starts to attack.

  • L1 – PlayStation
  • LB – Xbox
  • Space – PC

As we discussed, you should try to parry when a zombie starts attacking and is close by. I think it’s simpler to parry in first-person view because it’s easier to judge the zombie’s distance. However, feel free to practice near some enemies to find what works best for you.

If you’re feeling confident and want to try a challenging move, you can attempt a Perfect Parry right before an enemy attacks. It’s difficult to pull off consistently, so don’t worry if you struggle! But if you succeed, the zombie will be briefly stunned, giving Leon a chance to quickly finish them off.

If you’re having trouble finding a second Hatchet, Leon will eventually be able to unlock one while exploring the ARK.

How to obtain the Mortal Edge Hatchet in Resident Evil Requiem

Now, let’s cover how to get the Mortal Edge, a significantly improved axe perfect for parrying. There are two methods to unlock it in Requiem.

  • Defeat the Commander (Hunk) and pick it up from his body
  • After beating the main campaign, purchase the Mortal Edge from the Special Content Shop for 3,000 CP

So, that covers pretty much everything you need to know about the Hatchet in Resident Evil Requiem – how to keep it sharp, upgrade it for more damage, and even parry attacks with it. Hopefully, this helped you out! Now go get ’em and try not to become zombie food!
