Director Kevin Williamson revealed that an alternate ending for Scream 7 would have brought back the original Ghostface, Stu Macher, from the dead, but the idea was ultimately cut.
The new sequel is getting a mixed response from critics and audiences. While critics gave it a 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences seem to enjoy it much more, giving it a 77% score. Despite the critical divide, the movie has already earned over $100 million globally in its first week, showing strong support from horror fans.
Okay, so in the new Scream movie, I’m playing as Sidney Prescott again, and things are crazy! There’s a new Ghostface trying to take out my family, but this killer is seriously next-level. They’re using AI to mess with my head, making me believe Stu Macher – the killer from the first Scream – is somehow back for revenge. It’s super unsettling and honestly, really throws you for a loop!
The movie didn’t bring back the original Ghostface killer. However, the writer, Kevin Williamson, filmed a different ending for Scream 7 where Stu actually returned. He ultimately decided not to use that ending, and here’s the reason why.
Test audiences did not like Stu Macher’s return at the end of Scream 7

Williamson shared that the original intention for Scream 7 was to conclude with the shocking reveal that Stu Macher had survived, likely as a setup for another sequel, Scream 8. He told Esquire, however, that he had concerns about making this reveal believable.
He remembered initially being very skeptical, wondering how the story would resolve without the character dying. He also questioned whether audiences would be let down if they discovered the character wasn’t actually a real person, but rather a creation of artificial intelligence.
Worried about how to handle a key character, director Christopher Williamson filmed two different endings for Scream 7. They wanted to choose the best option for the movie, rather than feeling obligated to go one way or the other. Williamson explained they even filmed a short scene after the main ending, just in case. However, ultimately, the team decided the audience would prefer the character to die.
He explained that a threat from artificial intelligence feels more believable and realistic than other options. While bringing back a killer from the past – especially one defeated in such a memorable way – strains credibility, audiences now understand AI and recognize its potential, making it a much more relatable source of danger.
Will Stu Macher return in Scream 8? Neve Campbell has already pitched a sequel

I’m really hoping we see Stu Macher back in Scream 8! Everyone’s wondering if Paramount and Spyglass will even make an eighth film after how well Scream 7 did, but apparently Neve Campbell already has a cool idea for what could happen next. Fingers crossed!
While on the red carpet, Williamson told Deadline that filming often led to brainstorming sessions about potential storylines for a future installment. He explained that late at night on set, they’d start wondering what ‘Scream 8’ could be about and just throw out ideas.
Neve came up with a fantastic idea that everyone really liked. If the movie is successful and people enjoy it, we’re happy to continue making more for the fans. We’ll definitely deliver if there’s enough interest.
Campbell hinted at a potential plot twist for Scream 8 during a conversation with TopMob, though he didn’t reveal if Stu Macher would be involved.

She jokingly suggested that Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is always a suspect in Ghostface killings because she consistently appears at the scene whenever a new murder happens.
Okay, so I’m really intrigued by what I’ve seen about Scream 7! It looks like Gale Weathers is still seriously affected by the attack she went through in the last movie, and honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if she finally lost it and became the killer herself! Plus, even though Scream 8 hasn’t officially been confirmed, everyone’s pretty sure they’re already planning it. I’m so excited to see where they take the story!
