At the end of Star Trek: Discovery, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) faced a situation reminiscent of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) at the conclusion of Star Trek: Nemesis. Star Trek: Discovery finished its five-season run on Paramount+ in 2024, while Star Trek: Nemesis, released in 2002, marked the last film appearance of the original cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
In season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, Commander Michael Burnham guided the USS Discovery on a journey forward in time to the 32nd century. This incredible leap of 930 years created a strong connection between Burnham and the crew. Serving under Captain Burnham, the people of the Discovery became a close-knit, unconventional family within Starfleet.
Change was a frequent occurrence on Star Trek: Discovery, reflected in the show’s constantly shifting crew. This contrasts with Star Trek: The Next Generation, where Captain Picard maintained a stable senior staff for seven seasons and four movies – a total of eleven years.
Both Picard’s Enterprise at the end of Star Trek: Nemesis and Burnham’s ship in Star Trek: Discovery experienced significant changes to their crews. By the end of Discovery, the bridge crew looked very different from how it did when they first arrived in the 32nd century.
Captain Burnham Lost Many USS Discovery Crew, Like Picard After Star Trek: Nemesis
In the final moments of Star Trek: Discovery, after a 30-year time jump, Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker reaffirmed their relationship and set off on a new mission aboard the USS Discovery. However, the ship wouldn’t be crewed by the same team we’d come to know.
By the end of Star Trek: Discovery, Captain Saru, Lieutenant Tilly, Commander Reno, Lt. Commander Bryce, and Lt. Commander Nilsson all traveled through time with the USS Discovery and then departed Captain Burnham’s ship.
Saru became an ambassador and married the President of Ni’Var, T’Rima (Tara Rosling). Reno and Tilly began teaching at Starfleet Academy, while Bryce and Nilsson were assigned to different Starfleet vessels. Other members of the USS Discovery crew who departed before the series concluded were Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and Commander D. Nhan (Rachael Ancheri).
At the conclusion of Star Trek: Nemesis, Captain Picard felt a sense of loss as those around him moved on. After defeating Shinzon, the android Data tragically died, and Will Riker and Deanna Troi got married and accepted a new assignment commanding the USS Titan, leaving Picard behind.
What Happened To Picard’s USS Enterprise-E Crew After Star Trek: Nemesis
In Star Trek: Picard, it was revealed that Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) left shortly after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis to secretly have Picard’s son, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). Around the same time, Picard was made an Admiral and put in charge of a troubled mission to save the Romulans from the destruction of their sun.
After Captain Picard’s ship, the USS Enterprise-E, was commanded by Captain Worf (Michael Dorn), he took over as First Officer, replacing Commander Riker. The Enterprise-E was later destroyed under unclear circumstances, which Worf maintained he wasn’t responsible for, as shown in Star Trek: Picard season 3. When the new USS Enterprise-F was launched, none of the original crew members from Picard’s Enterprise were part of its team.
Captain Burnham probably had plenty of company on her adventures after the end of Star Trek: Discovery. It seems likely that familiar faces like Commander Rayner, Dr. Culber, Commander Stamets, Ensign Tal, and Cleveland Booker were still serving with her on the USS Discovery.
Even though many of her friends have gone on to new assignments, Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery are still actively working to protect the galaxy in the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The show takes place a few years after Star Trek: Discovery, and frequently mentions the Discovery’s ongoing missions.
