Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as Jessica Jones in a new season. Following the successful revival of Daredevil on Disney+, this season is expected to further integrate characters and storylines from the old Netflix ‘Defenders’ series into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jessica Jones’ return could be the first of many familiar faces from that era appearing in the MCU.
The last time viewers saw Jessica Jones, it was in the third season of her Netflix show. Now, seven years later, she’s moved on and isn’t living where we last saw her. This updated setting reflects how much Jessica has grown and changed since then, bringing her story into the 2020s.
Jessica Jones Has Gone Through Big Changes Since Her Netflix Series
During New York Comic Con, Marvel Television’s Brad Winderbaum hinted at big things to come for Jessica Jones after a long hiatus (as reported by Entertainment Weekly). He explained that when she returns, audiences will still recognize the core of what they love about the character, but she’ll be in a different place than where we last saw her at the end of the Netflix series. Winderbaum noted a time jump allows them to reintroduce her and other characters with a fresh start and new circumstances, while still maintaining some familiar elements and adding unexpected twists.
According to Winderbaum, significant events have happened in Jessica Jones’ life since we last saw her on screen. He hints these changes aren’t directly based on a specific, well-known storyline from Marvel comics.
It would be great to see how much Jessica Jones has grown since her Netflix series. Initially, she struggled with trust and kept people at a distance due to a deeply traumatic experience. By the series’ end, she’d become more confident and started confronting her past. A strong way to demonstrate her progress would be to show her in a healthy, supportive relationship, perhaps with Luke Cage.
A new season could beautifully demonstrate Jessica Jones’s growth since we last saw her, and it would be an ideal opportunity to bring back Mike Colter as Luke Cage. He’s been increasingly mentioned in connection with potential returns, following Krysten Ritter. Imagine the surprise if it was revealed that Luke and Jessica are now married! This would create a significant new storyline for both characters, opening up exciting possibilities for the future.
Bringing Luke Cage back would be a big step forward for Marvel’s more grounded, street-level stories. It could even pave the way for the return of a beloved superhero team we haven’t seen in movies or TV shows for a long time.
Are the Defenders Returning to the MCU?
Now that Jessica Jones is confirmed to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there’s talk of Luke Cage joining her soon, fans are wondering if the Defenders team will reunite. The original Defenders Saga on Netflix featured Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the Punisher as key heroes. It looks like at least three of these five characters will officially be back in the main MCU.
Marvel hasn’t yet announced who Daredevil will be teaming up with against Wilson Fisk, but the second season of Born Again could introduce a new version of the Defenders. This iconic team previously joined forces to defeat the Hand, and could now rise again to protect everyday people while the Avengers deal with larger, universe-level threats. This fits into the MCU’s current direction of having multiple superhero teams operating at different scales.
Although it’s unclear if characters like Iron Fist will return, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has opportunities to add new, ground-level heroes to a team like the Defenders. Characters such as Swordsman, Moon Knight, White Tiger, and Hawkeye could all be good fits. Some fans also speculate that other heroes might join this group for future adventures.
There’s growing speculation that Marvel is planning a major team-up movie. This project could wrap up the storyline that started with Wilson Fisk’s takeover of New York City in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. If this movie happens, it would almost certainly lead to the return of the Defenders – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist – and position them as a key team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward.
Krysten Ritter reprising her role as Jessica Jones is a significant development, hinting at something much larger. It paves the way for the return of a classic, yet often overlooked, superhero team from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the Defenders. If Luke Cage and Iron Fist join Jessica Jones, fans can expect exciting things to come.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premieres on March 24, 2026.
