Fans finally have an update on the next Matrix film! Writer and director Drew Goddard has confirmed that ‘The Matrix 5‘ is still in development, and he’s currently working on the script.
The Matrix series concluded in 2003 with Matrix: Revolutions, but was revived in 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections. Unfortunately, the new film wasn’t successful with audiences or critics and proved to be even more divisive than the earlier sequels.
Warner Bros. revealed plans for a fifth Matrix film in 2024. According to executive Jesse Ehrman, the new movie will build on the existing story and world while staying true to what fans love about the series.
Details about the new movie are scarce, and it’s still unclear if Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Neo and Trinity. However, recent news confirms the project hasn’t been abandoned – it’s still in development and work is ongoing, though it’s currently in the early phases.

Drew Goddard, the creator of ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ and a writer on ‘Project Hail Mary,’ recently told ScreenRant he’s continuing to develop the script.
He explained he was busy writing and completely focused on his work. He wasn’t sure how long it would take, but promised to share updates when he was finished.
Okay, so this is a big deal for The Matrix. The new fifth movie is the first one that isn’t completely directed by the Wachowskis – Lana Wachowski is still helping out as a producer, which is awesome, but someone else is taking the director’s chair this time around. It’s a pretty significant change for a series known for their unique vision.
