After being betrayed by Rob Rausch on the reality show The Traitors, Eric Nam realized something positive would come from the experience: inspiration for new music. The intense emotions he felt in Scotland – from obsession to heartbreak – provided excellent material for songwriting. His new single, “How the Fire Started,” which begins with the line “You never gave a damn about me until I had something you needed,” is clearly a message directed at Rausch. For the music video, Nam enlisted his former allies – Natalie Anderson, Yam Yam Arocho, Ron Funches, and Maura Higgins – to stage a playful western-style confrontation with Rob. Nam describes the process as both therapeutic and fun, and was surprised by how eager his Traitors castmates were to help. In fact, Rob Rausch himself said it was the least he could do.
The video features Nam and his fellow cast members playing exaggerated versions of themselves. Nam plays a character called “Eric the Vengeful,” while Rausch, known as “Robby Bobby,” is holding the other players captive on his ranch and making them do hard labor – but still look fashionable! The Wild West theme is a fun change after weeks of filming in muddy Scotland, and Higgins, or “Maura the Velvet Blade,” looks surprisingly different in a denim outfit reminiscent of Alyssa Milano in the early 2000s. Nam jokes that riding a horse reminded him of when he pretended to be a cow during a painting challenge, and he wondered how he could continue that storyline. Eventually, the players manage to tie up Rausch, symbolically removing his overalls – a moment Nam compares to Jo cutting her hair in Little Women – but his friend, Funches, arrives to rescue him. Funches had previously posted a video openly rooting for Rausch and against the other players.
Nam’s new song, “How The Fire Started,” has a gentle, country feel with a focus on acoustic guitar and heartfelt emotion. While not strictly country, Nam, who grew up in Atlanta, acknowledges the genre’s lasting impact on his music. He notes that as an Asian-American artist, people are often surprised to learn of his appreciation for country music. The accompanying music video is a chance for Nam to showcase all sides of himself – as a pop musician, actor, and recent reality TV star – and bring his fans along for the ride. He sees it as a fun way to conclude a wild period in his career, offering something fresh and personal to his audience.
