God of War creator blasts first look at Kratos in live-action series

Production has begun on the God of War TV series for Prime Video, but the creator of the original game has strongly criticized the first images of Kratos brought to life in the show, calling them “ridiculous.”

The upcoming show is based on the 2018 video game, where Kratos and his son Atreus travel through the nine realms to fulfill a final wish: scattering the ashes of Kratos’s wife from the highest peak. Throughout their journey, Atreus discovers his true identity as the Norse god Loki, and the story blends elements of Norse mythology.

So, everyone’s trying to make video game shows like high-quality TV now, right? We’ve seen it with Fallout and The Last of Us, and now it’s happening with God of War! I was stoked to hear Prime Video cast Ryan Hurst – you might know him from Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead – as Kratos. They also got Callum Vinson to play Atreus, which is awesome. I’m really hoping this one lives up to the hype!

But franchise creator David Jaffe has hit out at the first image of Kratos in the God of War show.

God of War creator says first image of Kratos in live action “just looks stupid”

Jaffe shared his thoughts on the image through his YouTube channel, stating he remains optimistic about the upcoming God of War TV show and confident in its creator, Ron Moore.

He acknowledged everyone is working hard, but expressed his disappointment with what he’d seen so far. He clarified that both things could be true – the image could be bad, and it was. However, he strongly praised Ron Moore, the show’s creator, calling him incredibly talented and predicting the show would ultimately be good.

The biggest problem, according to the creator, was how Kratos looked in the pose and with that expression – he felt it made the character seem foolish. He questioned whether that was the right way to introduce a brand new character, especially for the first time to people unfamiliar with him, as he hoped this character would become the face of the series.

Jaffe suggested that Prime Video might be aiming for a broader viewership. They could be thinking, ‘Let’s prioritize the relationship between father and son. If we emphasize intense anger and aggression, some viewers might be turned off. That’s a possibility.’

He added that it was hard to find a photo that didn’t look like the subject was relieving himself in the woods, describing it as a “terrible” and “stupid” image.

The person behind the project mentioned that Cory Barlog, the director and writer of the 2018 God of War game, is playing a significant role in the TV show. They feel Barlog has a lot of talent, especially when it comes to telling stories, and are confident in the show’s potential. However, they jokingly expressed some confusion or surprise about something else entirely, saying, “What the f*ck is this?”
