Games I loved growing up – ones that felt lost for years – are suddenly becoming popular again. It felt like ages since anyone paid attention to the Legacy of Kain series, but now it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves. While a brand new game hasn’t arrived yet (that’s coming on March 31st with Ascendance), the existing games have been beautifully remastered and are getting a lot of well-deserved attention.
The newest addition to the series is Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, which wraps up the story of Kain and his complex relationship with Raziel. Originally released in 2003, Defiance was a game I eagerly anticipated. As a dedicated fan of the franchise, it stood out as a highlight of that year for me.
More than two decades after its original release, Legacy of Kain: Defiance isn’t just receiving a visual update. Like many recent remasters – including others in the Legacy of Kain series – this release goes beyond a simple port, aiming to honor the game and its lasting influence. The remaster focuses not only on improving how the game looks and plays today, but also on preserving the story of how it was made.
This collection features a fantastic 3D action-adventure game, considered one of the best of its time. It’s packed with bonus content, special features, and historical materials that any fan of the Legacy of Kain series will love. If you’re familiar with the game’s history and the making of Defiance, you’ll be thrilled with this incredible re-release of some of the most captivating moments in the Legacy of Kain story.
The Coin Landed On It’s Edge
Legacy of Kain: Defiance is the true highlight of the series, though it unexpectedly became the last game for a long time. The developers didn’t plan for it to end there, but the franchise, much like its own story, was subject to unforeseen circumstances. This action-adventure game is very much a product of its era.
It’s not necessarily a flaw, but the original game definitely shows its age, especially with a camera that can be a bit awkward and doesn’t always frame the action well. The developers at PlayEveryWhere have fixed this in the updated version with a much smoother, more reliable camera that consistently keeps Kain and Raziel in view.
While it doesn’t have the same visual polish as the original game, being able to finish those notoriously difficult jumps without getting overly frustrated is a great improvement. I often switched back to the original camera view, but thankfully, it was a quick and simple process. Navigating the menus to switch views could take a couple extra clicks, but it wasn’t a major inconvenience.
This classic action-adventure game is one that very clearly feels of its time.
Okay, so Defiance definitely shows its age a bit, and even though the developers clearly put a ton of effort into it, you can’t really hide that. But honestly, I still think it’s a fantastic game and a real contender for the best in the series! You might notice it’s a little older, but it’s still so good.
Honestly, this game looks incredible – better than I ever remember! The sound and graphics have always been a huge part of what makes this series special, and they really went all out with this remaster to keep that epic feel. The voice acting and story are seriously top-notch, even compared to a lot of newer games. It’s got this really dramatic, almost over-the-top quality that just pulls you in – I can’t stop listening!
Legacy of Kain: Defiance truly shines thanks to its incredible voice acting – Simon Templeton’s captivating performance as Kain and Michael Bell’s earnest portrayal of Raziel are standouts. The story is so strong that the gameplay sometimes feels like a way to get to the next great acting moment. This game offers a deeply detailed and mythic narrative, a quality that’s rare in modern games, making it a truly special experience.
The Wheel Will Turn
You’ll primarily spend your time playing the main game in Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, but the game’s presentation is truly outstanding. It also includes a wealth of fascinating behind-the-scenes material, like development documents and early concepts that didn’t make the final cut.
I’ve been hoping to see more presentations like this one, and thankfully, they’re becoming more common. It’s not just about saving old games; it’s about documenting the entire process, from the initial idea to the final release. This presentation does a fantastic job of showing the game from every perspective, and it presents that information in a really beautiful way.
Lost levels are among the most interesting discoveries for fans of the game. These playable remnants of cut content offer a unique look behind the scenes. While the final game is excellent, seeing what didn’t make the cut highlights just how dedicated Crystal Dynamics was during development.
A demo exists for a planned sixth game in the Legacy of Kain series, called The Dark Prophecy, which would have continued the story directly after Defiance. While Defiance wrapped up Kain and Raziel’s storyline, The Dark Prophecy aimed to bring Kain back as the main character. Interestingly, despite being designed as a sequel to Defiance, it felt more like a follow-up to Blood Omen 2 in terms of its overall feel and direction.
Although the core gameplay is the focus of Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, the game’s presentation is truly exceptional and deserves special mention.
The early versions of the Legacy of Kain games were packed with extra content, much like the special features you’d find on a blockbuster movie DVD. They really showed off the work and passion that went into creating these games, so it’s fantastic to see some of that original content included now.

The remastered version includes wonderful bonus footage, like outtakes and behind-the-scenes clips from the voice recording sessions. It’s fantastic to see acting greats such as Tony Jay and Rene Auberjonois being so relaxed and natural while recording, and we’re thrilled these moments have been carefully preserved.
As a huge Legacy of Kain fan, I’m absolutely loving this! There’s so much to dive into – the game itself is fantastic, but it’s the extra stuff that really makes it special. All the development diaries, playable cut content, and glimpses of what could have been are just incredible. It’s a truly amazing collection, and honestly, any fan of the series needs to get their hands on it. And if they ever decide to give the same treatment to Blood Omen and the Kain-focused games, well, that would be a dream come true!
