Warning: Includes MASSIVE SPOILERS for Marshals Season 1, Episode 1!
With the arrival of Marshals and the return of Yellowstone, the Yellowstone universe is moving forward in time – beyond the eras of 1923 and 1883. This marks the first expansion of Taylor Sheridan’s Western saga since Yellowstone concluded in 2024. Fans can look forward to two new series this month, but Lawmen: Bass Reeves (focused on Kayce Dutton) is expected to spark more debate and have a stronger emotional effect than The Madison, which features a completely new set of characters.
The new series Marshals features several returning actors, including Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, along with Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill. While their appearances were expected due to their roles in Kayce’s storyline on Yellowstone, one important character was absent from all promotional materials. The first episode reveals that Kayce’s wife, Monica Dutton, has died, setting the stage for a deeply emotional journey in Marshals.
‘Marshals’ Makes Kayce Dutton TV’s Latest Gritty Action Hero
The new show, Marshals, has a lot of potential. Luke Grimes is a strong actor – he proved that in Eddington and Yellowstone – and he fits the role of the lead perfectly. This series is a departure from the original Yellowstone’s family drama, shifting into a gritty crime thriller with Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton, as the unexpected hero we sometimes saw glimpses of before. The decision to not include Monica was likely due to the actress Kelsey Asbille’s schedule, which is understandable, even if it wasn’t the ideal storyline choice. The creators are working to make the story work well despite this change.
With Monica’s death, Kayce is now free to become the kind of decisive hero he’s held back from being throughout the series, and Luke Grimes gets a chance to really shine in the role. He can embody that classic TV hero – like Jack Reacher or Jack Ryan – who finds strength and purpose after a loss. The show handled this shift effectively by building tension throughout the episode and only revealing Monica’s fate at the very end. However, this development ultimately highlights a problem with Yellowstone itself.
Monica Dutton’s Fate Impacts ‘Yellowstone’, Too

Paramount Network
Sequels often risk damaging the impact of the original story, and that’s especially true with Kayce Dutton’s journey in Marshals. His actions there have significant consequences for the five seasons of Yellowstone, and what happens in Yellowstone also affects his story in Marshals. The core of Kayce’s character development has always been about wanting a simple, peaceful family life with Monica and Tate. He briefly explored the idea of following in his father’s footsteps and running the Dutton Ranch, trying out different paths like Homer Simpson, but ultimately, that just wasn’t who he was meant to be.
A memorable moment in Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 happens when Kayce talks to Tate about what the future holds for their family. He tells Tate that, unlike his father and sister, he doesn’t have a strong drive to achieve more, but he would fully support Tate if he wanted to take over the Dutton Ranch and continue the family’s traditions. Kayce has long struggled with whether he should live up to his father’s expectations or follow his own heart and build a quiet life with Monica. The show Marshals presents a completely different perspective on this dilemma.

The new series Marshals begins with a surprising twist, similar to how Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2, started after John Dutton’s death. Previously, Kayce Dutton had two clear choices, and he ultimately made one. Now, the story jumps forward in time, and he’s unexpectedly faced with a third option – the ranch is gone, and so is Monica. While Marshals promises to be enjoyable, it remains to be seen whether it will enhance the Yellowstone story or feel like a separate, conflicting addition.
