Ridley Scott’s New Dave Bautista Thriller Is Officially 1 of the Most-Watched Films in America

Fans of Dave Bautista and Ridley Scott have a reason to celebrate this March! Their new thriller is performing surprisingly well, and after a quick start, it became available on Netflix on February 27th, getting off to a strong beginning.

While Trap House isn’t a cinematic masterpiece like films from Ridley Scott such as Alien, Blade Runner, or Gladiator, it’s quickly become popular on Netflix. As of March 2nd, it’s the second most-watched film, and the only thing keeping it from the top spot is Scarlett Johansson’s Jurassic Park: Rebirth, which was just added to the platform on February 28th.

Bautista was interested in making more Trap House movies, potentially creating a franchise, but that’s unlikely to happen, especially in theaters, since the first film wasn’t successful.

The film initially struggled in theaters, earning only $126,039. Critics gave it a lukewarm 52% rating, and audiences rated it even lower at 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it found success after being released for streaming, becoming popular with viewers watching at home.

Trap House Almost Didn’t Happen for Dave Bautista

The film Trap House centers on DEA agent Ray Seale (played by Bautista) as he navigates a complex relationship with his son, Cody (Jack Champion, known for his role in Avatar). The cast also includes Sophia Lillis, famous for the IT movies, and Bobby Cannavale, who has appeared in Ant-Man, MaXXXine, and Boardwalk Empire.

However, production of Trap House almost fell apart until Bautista brought in director Michael Dowse. The two had previously worked together on Stuber, which helped get the project back on track.

Originally, Michael wasn’t supposed to direct the film. We unexpectedly lost our director just weeks before production. We’d been trying to get this movie made for years, but my busy schedule kept getting in the way. Eventually, we found a short window of time where we could film it, and an even smaller one where I was available to be in it. This meant we had to dramatically shorten my shooting schedule – by about two and a half weeks.

Dave Bautista Admits Trap House Was Rushed

The confusing story and how it was filmed might be due to the fact that Bautista says they had to rush the whole schedule.

Losing our director was a huge blow to the project and left everyone feeling discouraged. I reached out to Mike, explaining we desperately needed someone to take charge. He immediately agreed to help, stepping in quickly and getting right to work. He was a natural leader, and I knew he could handle it, which is why I contacted him in the first place.

Despite its initial poor performance in theaters, Trap House has found a new audience on streaming services, becoming a hit for Netflix viewers. This adds to a recent string of successes for Bautista, as his film with Jason Momoa, The Wrecking Crew, is also proving popular with audiences heading into 2026.
