Anna Camp, who stars in Scream 7, has removed a social media post celebrating the film’s box office success. She says the post, shared despite negative reviews and calls for a boycott, didn’t accurately represent her own views.
Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard, both well-known from the original ‘Scream’ movies, are back for the seventh installment, and their return is likely a big reason why ‘Scream 7’ had such a strong opening weekend in theaters.
The movie earned $64.1 million in North America, which is a new high for the series, and another $33.1 million internationally. Its total worldwide earnings now reach $97.2 million, comfortably exceeding its $45 million production cost.
Despite calls for a boycott following Melissa Barrera’s removal from the cast, and a lukewarm 33% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the new Scream movie has still managed to succeed. Interestingly, audiences seem to enjoy it much more, giving it a 78% rating.
Anna Camp apologizes for Scream 7 repost

Anna Camp, known for her role as Jessica Bowden in Scream 7, shared a post on Instagram over the weekend. The post stated that despite efforts to boycott the film, negative reviews, and leaks, it was ultimately audience support that led to its success.
The post first appeared on the Scream With Ryan C. Showers podcast, which has spoken out against efforts to boycott the film and the differing scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The podcast account also shared a message about the film’s story, which includes the Taylor Swift song ‘Karma’.
After facing strong criticism, Camp removed the post and explained, “I realized I shared someone else’s story that didn’t align with my own views.”
I’ve removed the repost because I didn’t intend to cause any upset, and I apologize to anyone who was bothered by it.
I recently shared a story that didn’t align with my own views. I’ve taken it down now, and I sincerely apologize if it caused any offense or upset anyone. I truly didn’t intend to cause harm.

Originally, Scream 7 was planned as a direct sequel to the sixth film, continuing the story of sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. However, in late 2023, Barrera was let go from the project because of statements she made regarding the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
She used social media to voice her support for Palestine, stating that the Gaza Strip resembled a “concentration camp” and characterizing Israel’s actions there as “genocide.” She also clarified that not all Palestinians support Hamas, and not all Jewish people support the Israeli government.
Don’t judge or resent an entire group based on the actions of a few. I support everyone who is affected by this conflict, and I hope for freedom and peace for you and your loved ones.

After being let go, she released a statement saying she remains committed to speaking up for vulnerable people and championing peace, safety, human rights, and freedom. She believes it’s important to continue voicing her opinions and won’t stay silent.
Soon after, Jenna Ortega left the movie, and the directors of Scream, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, began working on a different film called Abigail.
Many fans were upset by Barrera’s firing, and a social media campaign called #BoycottScream7 quickly gained traction, with people signing petitions and organizing events to protest the decision.
Camp faces backlash after apology
After Camp first shared the post that criticized the movement, her Instagram page quickly filled with angry comments.

Okay, so it’s weird – a lot of posts have comments turned off, but a recent update about Mary Claire and her character, Camp, still has them open. And people are totally dropping spoilers in the comments! It’s a bit frustrating if you haven’t seen it yet, but yeah, the spoiler’s out there for anyone who wants to know.
People responded with harsh criticism, calling one person “ignorant” and urging them to be more aware of current events, especially given the timing. Many also shared the Palestinian flag in their replies.
I was checking out the discussion on Reddit, and someone hit the nail on the head. They were saying that if we only judge a movie by how much money it makes, then yeah, it makes sense. But honestly, Scream 7 felt like they just threw it together to make a quick buck, and that’s exactly what it seemed like.
I usually avoid speaking for those who’ve passed away, but I strongly suspect Wes Craven would be ashamed of how this movie series has evolved.
Her apology has caused a lot of debate online. One person questioned how she thought her original post would be received, calling it a significant backtrack. They pointed out that she started a repost with the phrase ‘the boycott didn’t work,’ and wondered what she believed people were boycotting the movie for in the first place.
Someone else stated they didn’t believe her claim of not understanding the post’s meaning. They pointed out that all the actors in the film received extensive media training, specifically on how to address the controversy, and found her feigned innocence unconvincing.
Some fans came to her defense, with one person commenting that they wouldn’t normally believe the situation, but that she seemed completely unaware of the boycott, or even why it was happening. They added that she likely wouldn’t understand if someone explained it to her.
