A new God of War game is supposedly being made, but it won’t follow Kratos’ story this time. The game is expected to star Faye, Kratos’ wife, as the main character.

Cory Barlog led the development of the 2018 God of War, but Eric Williams took charge for 2022’s Ragnarök. Since then, Barlog has been quietly working on a new, unannounced project, and recent reports suggest we may finally know what it is.

According to sources familiar with the plans, Barlog isn’t leaving the franchise. His next game is rumored to be set within the same world, but will star a new character named Faye, and the story will reportedly take place before the events of the last two games.

Back in July 2025, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier hinted at what Cory Barlog was working on next. He mentioned it wasn’t a completely new game idea, but it would likely feel very fresh and different.

Talk about a new God of War game resurfaced on March 1, 2026. According to sources familiar with the project, it’s expected to be a very different experience than previous installments. Journalist Jason Schreier hinted at this, stating that his earlier comments now make more sense.

On March 2nd, a well-known and trustworthy source, NateTheHate, shared some new details about the upcoming game. According to this insider, the game will take place in the world of God of War, and players will control a character named Faye.

Gameplay is said to differ from the Norse God of War games, with more of a focus on action.”

Fellow gaming insider Shpeshal Nick also concurred, saying “This matches everything I was told.”

From what I’ve gathered, the new game takes place in the God of War universe and stars a character named Faye. It’s expected to have a different style of gameplay than the recent Norse-themed God of War games, with a greater emphasis on action. The current plan is to reveal the game this year and release it in the first half of 2027, though that’s subject to change if there are any unforeseen delays.

Who is Faye in God of War?

If you’re familiar with the last two God of War games, you likely already know the background. But if you haven’t played them, or just need a quick reminder, here’s a rundown of the story so far.

Faye was a giant from the world of Midgard, belonging to a race known as the Jötun. While giants come in many forms, Faye was a Frost Giant with the special ability to see the future. The actress Deborah Ann Woll, known for her roles in Daredevil and True Blood, played Faye.

She was a powerful warrior, capable of pushing even Thor to his breaking point in battle. But despite her strength, Faye wasn’t simply violent. She was actually a kind and compassionate person who always looked for ways to help those weaker than herself.

Faye originally owned the Leviathan Axe. Losing it led to her first meeting with Kratos, and the two later married and had a son named Atreus.

We learned from God of War (2018) that Faye died when Atreus was young. The first game’s story centers on Kratos and Atreus scattering her ashes from the highest peak in all the Nine Realms, and discovering the truth about who she really was along the way.

Throughout God of War Ragnarök, she appears in dreams and flashbacks, offering Kratos guidance and playfully suggesting he tone down his grunting.
