Absolute Batman’s Horrifying Scarecrow Look Revealed

A new villain design in DC’s Absolute Universe is getting a lot of attention from fans. The cover for Absolute Batman #19 shows a redesigned Scarecrow, offering a more menacing look for the classic Gotham villain. This artwork is for the April 2026 issue.

Absolute Scarecrow look shared by Scott Snyder

Writer Scott Snyder shared the cover art by Nick Dragotta for issue #19. The image shows Scarecrow’s reflection in Batman’s batarangs. At first glance, Scarecrow looks strangely calm, dressed in a suit and hat reminiscent of the 1920s. A closer look reveals unsettling details: his eyes appear as buttons, and thread-like lines extend across his widely opened, fractured mouth.

Snyder shared a detailed look at the character’s design during a live stream on Whatnot. He showed viewers a picture of it on his phone as he was talking.

Within the Absolute Universe storyline, the villain Scarecrow is portrayed as Dr. Jonathan Crane, a doctor associated with the Ark M facility. A future issue hints that Poison Ivy wasn’t the only danger lurking within Ark M. As the Joker’s attention turns to Absolute Batman, he seeks help from Dr. Crane. Issue #19 of Absolute Batman will be released on April 8, 2026, and will cost $4.99 (according to League of Comics).

The latest issue of Absolute Batman, number 18, is written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Eric Canete. It picks up after Poison Ivy’s infection has spread through Gotham, with Batman battling mutated creatures and discovering a hidden danger below the city. Issue #18 will be available on March 11, 2026. Issue #20 is coming out on May 13, 2026, and suggests a significant tragedy for Gotham, as well as the debut of the Robins in this version of the story.

People online immediately shared their reactions. Some joked that the villain looked like Mr. Bean trying to go undercover, while others found the design creepy. One commenter predicted, “Robin would be terrified to face something like this.”
