Netflix’s His House Is Mandatory Viewing for Sinners Fans

I was absolutely blown away by Sinners! It’s incredible – racking up a record-breaking 16 Academy Award nominations. For a film of its type, that’s just phenomenal. Everyone’s talking about Ryan Coogler potentially winning Best Director and Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor, and it’s a strong possibility. But I was so thrilled to see Wunmi Mosaku nominated for Best Supporting Actress – she was amazing as Annie! And honestly, while she’s fantastic in Sinners, I think her best work is actually in His House. It’s a really original horror film, and she truly shines in it.

I recently discovered His House, and I’m completely blown away! It’s Remi Weekes’ first feature film, and it somehow managed a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes – incredible! It came out in 2020, right when everything was shutting down because of COVID, so it didn’t get the attention it deserved. But honestly, I think it’s one of the best horror movies of the last ten years. The performances by Sope Dirisu, Wunmi Mosaku, and even Matt Smith (who you might know from House of the Dragon) are fantastic. It’s a really personal and scary story, and if you enjoyed Sinners, I think you’ll absolutely love this.

His House Is a Different Kind of Ghost Horror Movie

His House tells the story of a Sudanese refugee couple starting over in England. As they try to build a new life, they’re haunted by a terrifying presence from their past – a Sudanese spirit known as an apeth, or night witch.

This horror film effectively combines atmospheric tension with startling jump scares, but what truly sets it apart is its depth. Unlike many horror movies, it takes time to develop the characters and their history, slowly revealing their story of escaping a war-torn country alongside the haunting itself. It’s a complex and detailed experience that feels more like a novel than a typical 90-minute film.

The film offers a surprisingly emotional experience. While it fits into the currently popular style of ‘elevated horror,’ it builds a sense of sadness and dread slowly, rather than relying on cheap scares. It’s genuinely frightening, but in a deeply upsetting and relatable way – one that would be particularly impactful for anyone who’s faced a similar struggle.

Wunmi Mosaku Is Even Better in His House Than in Sinners

Wunmi Mosaku is fantastic in Sinners, but her truly standout performance is as Rial Majur in His House. While her role in Sinners as a southern Hoodoo practitioner is captivating and connects to the story’s core, she doesn’t have enough screen time to fully showcase her talent. His House provides her with the opportunity to truly shine.

Wunmi Mosaku delivers a powerful performance as a refugee haunted by her past, filled with grief and fear, yet remarkably resilient. She conveys Rial Majur’s emotions so vividly that the audience deeply connects with her journey, experiencing both her devastating errors and her yearning for a fresh start. Her character work and acting in His House are significantly more nuanced and impactful than her performance in Sinners. Mosaku’s exceptional acting is a key reason the film has earned a perfect 100% rating.

Her performance in Sinners is truly excellent, and she absolutely deserves the nomination. However, what’s even more important is that she’s finally getting the recognition she’s earned for consistently delivering top-tier acting over the years. If you enjoyed Sinners, be sure to watch His House, especially if you discovered Mosaku’s talent through that show.

His House is available to stream on Netflix.
