The 2024 Canadian slasher film, In a Violent Nature, from IFC Films and Shudder, managed to refresh the horror genre in a way few films have recently. The movie is notable for showing most of the story through the eyes of the killer, a large, masked figure named Johnny. It features a particularly memorable and shocking kill in a yoga scene, and keeps viewers guessing about the killer’s motivations.
Although In a Violent Nature has a 78% rating on the Tomatometer, audience reactions are much more mixed, with only a 44% score on the Popcornmeter. Some viewers appreciated the movie’s slow pace and unique style, while others found it boring. The lack of dialogue from the main character and an underwhelming ending also left some feeling the story was lacking. Fortunately, the trailer for In a Violent Nature 2 suggests the filmmakers have addressed these issues.
In A Violent Nature 2 Changes Perspectives And Ups The Action
The unique concept of a horror movie filmed entirely from the killer’s point of view – a silent, undead slasher in the woods of Ontario – likely only worked brilliantly once. A sequel with the same idea would probably feel repetitive, even for fans of the original. Thankfully, early glimpses of In a Violent Nature 2 suggest it’s moving beyond the first film’s central character and introducing a wider cast, which means more opportunities for suspense and scares.
The movie appears to be introducing a large group of characters – basically an entire summer camp staff – and at least one of them will accidentally bring back a vengeful spirit, leading to chaos. The preview shows we’ll still see things from the spirit’s point of view, but it also suggests we’ll get to know some of the other characters. While they probably won’t have much development before meeting unfortunate ends, this is still more character work than the first movie offered.
Because so many characters are going to die, the movie won’t spend much time on drawn-out scenes. We’ll see the killings happen faster, and the creative ways people are murdered using camp activities look really promising. In a Violent Nature 2 appears to be a more action-packed sequel, improving on everything that made the first movie work.
In A Violent Nature 2 Leans Into Its Friday The 13th Inspiration In The Sequel
The upcoming film, In a Violent Nature 2, appears to be heavily inspired by Friday the 13th. Like the Friday the 13th movies featuring Jason Voorhees, the killer in this film will target a group of young adults at a camp. Fans can likely expect to see some classic slasher moments, possibly with a fresh twist – many are hoping for a recreation of the iconic sleeping bag kill.
What really struck me about this sequel is how much fun it has with its influences. It’s not exactly a parody of the Friday the 13th films, or Jason Voorhees himself, but it’s packed with nods and references that are a blast to spot as the story unfolds. It’s clear In a Violent Nature took a lot of inspiration from that iconic camp slasher series, but this feels like a direct, loving tribute – honestly, it’s the closest we’ve gotten to a new Friday the 13th experience in years, and I’m here for it.
