As a huge fan of his work, I was thrilled to learn this backstory! The story follows how Hardy, with the assistance of Claire Ripley, a neighbor of the victims, reopens the investigation. Of course, Miller joins him again, and together they try to finally bring the truth to light. It’s fantastic to see how this case shaped the Hardy we know.
The third season centers around the aftermath of an attack on Trish Winterman (Julie Hesmondhalgh). Unable to remember what happened or who attacked her, Trish teams up with the detectives to investigate potential suspects and piece together the events of that night.
Crime stories have become predictable lately, and it’s often too easy to guess who the killer is. What’s particularly frustrating is the lack of foreshadowing or subtle hints beforehand.

We meet all the suspects right away, so you get to know them and watch their stories unfold alongside the investigation, which makes it all the more compelling.
Clues only become apparent once you know who committed the crime. These hints are quite subtle, and because the 8-episode stories are packed with information, they’re easy to miss. The mystery isn’t solved until Hardy discovers the truth and surprisingly, asks for a suspect’s shoe size.
Broadchurch’s Characters Add to Its Ingenuity
Broadchurch is a compelling drama that explores how serious crimes impact individuals and the wider community. Central to the series is the Latimer family, who repeatedly return to grapple with the consequences and attempt to heal after the tragic death of their son, Danny.
The pain of the Latimer family is a central and consistently acknowledged part of the story, handled with sensitivity and depth. The actress portraying the grieving mother delivers a particularly powerful performance, convincingly showing her character’s anger, sadness, and guilt. Unlike many mystery shows that prioritize the investigation itself, Broadchurch gives significant attention to the victims’ family, making it as much a moving family drama as a thrilling whodunit.
The series primarily follows detectives Hardy and Miller. Hardy is first presented as a typical, world-weary investigator haunted by the unresolved Sandbrook murders. But he quickly proves to be much more complex. His deep personal involvement in that previous case ultimately led to his transfer to the town of Broadchurch.
Although the show never directly states it, Detective Hardy’s actions strongly hint at post-traumatic stress disorder. This is evident in his detached demeanor throughout the investigation and his visible hesitation when he first sees young Danny’s body. His background and personality feel authentic, and we only begin to understand the complexity of his character as he starts to confide in Miller.
The dynamic between Hardy and Miller is a common one in crime dramas, reminiscent of pairings in shows like Law & Order: SVU and The Killing. However, Broadchurch portrays the development of their relationship in a realistic way. They start off with tension, as Miller feels overlooked for a promotion after taking maternity leave. Despite this, their mutual commitment to finding out what happened to Danny keeps them working together.
They complement each other well. Miller’s deep roots in the town help Hardy settle into his job, and Hardy’s expertise in difficult cases helps Miller maintain professional distance. As they learn what matters to each other, they build a respectful working relationship that remains strictly professional.
Broadchurch stands out from many crime dramas because it focuses on realistic issues and how they impact people. Unlike shows that rely on sensationalized storylines, Broadchurch prioritizes well-developed characters and presents disturbing cases that resolve in a satisfying and believable way each season.
