Spoilers ahead for the season-four finale of The Traitors.
Honestly, I knew Maura Higgins wasn’t going to last long on The Traitors. Apparently, she showed up at the castle barely understanding what the show was even about! Monét told us Maura actually asked if they were going to have banishments every night after the first one. As the game went on, she kept questioning how she was still there, admitting she wasn’t really playing well. She just didn’t seem to realize she was being kept around on purpose. Rob clearly knew he could count on her to mess up at the very end, and she totally delivered – it was actually kind of perfect!
Okay, so the biggest twist? Maura actually figured out Eric was a Traitor thanks to a tip from Tara Lipinski. It was a real ‘aha!’ moment for her. But here’s where it gets frustrating – she just couldn’t bring herself to believe Rob was in on it. Honestly, the thought of Rob being a Traitor was too much for her. That led to a seriously misguided pinky promise where she agreed to team up with Rob to eliminate Tara, Johnny, and Eric, hoping they could win together as the two Love Island alums. And let me tell you, Rob completely took advantage of her trust. He used her to get exactly what he wanted.
Maura was certain she’d win, even after making a move that guaranteed her loss. By voting Tara out, she ended up in the final round with the two players who were secretly working against everyone else. Despite this, she remained convinced of her victory. When the final three players had to decide who to eliminate, Maura chose to play another round, smugly telling Eric, “I think you thought you had us all fooled.” This was ironic because the audience knew she’d already lost, but she was becoming more and more confident. During the voting process, Eric tried to tell her she was wrong about Rob, but she still voted him out, giving him an extra $100,000 and leaving her to face the player who had been betraying her the entire game in the final round.
The funniest moment of the game came when the roles were revealed. Maura, who Rob had chosen as an ally specifically because she was so easily swayed, decided to have some fun with him. He was absolutely certain she was on his side, so she pretended to be a traitor… then dramatically announced she was actually faithful! It’s almost sad how confidently Rob misjudged her. Even funnier, he played along with her deception, pretending to be shocked. Then he revealed he was a traitor all along, but he couldn’t hide his amusement, even while apologizing.
Let’s be clear: The Traitors isn’t a show about clever strategy. You’d see more strategic gameplay in a single episode of Survivor. What The Traitors does excel at is compelling characters, and Maura was the best example. She was memorable with her outfits, completely lost when it came to the game itself, and her Irish accent was charming. The show cleverly established from the beginning why she wouldn’t succeed: she depended heavily on Rob, who often had to help her, and she couldn’t consider that he might be one of the traitors. She didn’t really look at the clues, and that inability made her surprisingly likable. At the end, she jokingly told Rob he’d never find a girlfriend, praising his ability to lie, then burst out laughing, admitting she thought she was winning. While she didn’t have a chance of winning, Maura played her role perfectly.
