The Traitors Season-Finale Recap: Critical Tinking

Maura believed the Traitors were going to publicly expose her as the one being eliminated, but the finale revealed a different plan: Rob and Eric decided to eliminate their friend Mark, sending him to the coffin outside the castle. This was unexpected, especially considering how close Rob and Mark were. It seems Mark’s growing distrust of Eric led to his downfall. Rob chose to side with Eric instead of keeping Mark around as a potential ally – at least for the time being.

The lines are clearly drawn at the castle: Johnny is absolutely sure Rob and Eric are the Traitors, leaving everyone split into two groups – the Olympians and the Traitors – with Maura stuck in the middle. Rob is trying to convince Maura to vote out Johnny and then Tara, but Tara is also working on Maura, urging her to vote out Eric. It’s a situation where Maura is being pulled in two directions, and she seems easily swayed, so it’s unclear which way she’ll vote.

She’s absolutely set on flying in the helicopter for their last mission, so she and Rob take off while everyone else goes to the loch. I always enjoy watching them have fun in the air, but I especially love it when they make someone scared do it – though they’ve run out of Real Housewives to challenge! Instead, we see Rob jump from the helicopter into the lake to win double the prize money. Maura stays in the helicopter, carefully protecting her hair with her signature beanie, just like Lady Gaga on tour.

Okay, so the real drama kicks in when Maura lets Rob in on Tara’s plan – but it’s not to warn him, it’s to try and get him on their side to kick Eric off the island. Honestly, I could feel for Rob in that moment! Everything he’d been working towards was starting to fall apart. Maura even says, and I quote, “I tink that he tinks that we’re stupid enough to not tink he’s a Traitor, but he is,” which…wow, that’s a lot of ‘tinks’! The thing is, if Eric’s gone, Rob loses his numbers, and Johnny and Tara would suddenly be the frontrunners. It would be a total underdog victory, like a real David vs. Goliath story!

Up until now, Rob has had an easy time on the show, and hasn’t really been challenged. This is partly because his opponents haven’t been very strong, but it’s also made him less appealing to watch. It’s exciting to finally see him struggle and realize he doesn’t have as much influence over Maura as he believed.

He’s now focusing all his energy on convincing Maura he’s trustworthy at the Round Table discussion. As anticipated, he and Eric start by questioning Johnny and Tara, pointing out they seemed distant early in the game. However, Johnny and Tara quickly defend themselves, explaining their reasoning. They believe Maura is one of the ‘Faithful’ players, which means Rob and Eric must be the two ‘Traitors’ – and Eric’s secretive behavior is a major giveaway. In a final effort to sway Maura, Tara reveals that Eric mentioned her name while they were driving, and Eric admits it happened.

Rob had the last say, and he skillfully convinced everyone that Alan (who was in charge of production) had secretly made one of the players a ‘Traitor’ to keep it hidden from their friend. When it was time to bring someone new into the game, they naturally chose that friend. Whether it was because he made a strong case or was simply the most recent person they talked to, he convinced Maura to cast the deciding vote for Johnny. It was incredibly frustrating – like how a football fan might react to a terrible call! Not only did Johnny and Tara finally solve the mystery, but this unexpected outcome means we’re missing out on a potentially amazing twist at the end of what had been a rather predictable season. Sadly, Maura’s decision cost both herself and the viewers that excitement and the chance to win the prize money.

Seeing her excitedly celebrate with Rob in the kitchen afterwards was especially difficult. They made a pact, driven by Rob’s strategy, to eliminate both Tara and Eric, and Rob was thrilled – he realized he could win the entire prize money, as he’d been manipulating the game all along. He didn’t need any convincing to agree to the plan, clearly motivated by the potential winnings – perhaps to fund his snake hobby (though it’s unclear if he owns or just catches them – he definitely seems like a snake!). Meanwhile, Maura is likely to leave with nothing but her hat boxes.

When the truth came out – and after seeing Alan’s ridiculously sparkly snuggie – everyone had to face the consequences. Tara looked great, which honestly, was the most important thing, especially since the whole situation felt a bit underwhelming. They all voted to banish someone again, and Maura, sticking with Rob’s plan, voted to eliminate Tara. I had to pause the show and watch Tara’s gold-medal skate from 1998 – much better memories! Okay, back to the episode. As planned, Maura and Rob voted to banish someone else, completely surprising Eric. Though she briefly doubted herself, as she often does, Maura went through with it and Eric was eliminated.

The most dramatic moment arrives when the final two players reveal who they are, and Maura realizes she was completely mistaken about everything. She tries to playfully mislead everyone when she reveals her identity, and Rob brilliantly pretends to fall for it, even though he knows the truth. She laughs, but the situation quickly becomes embarrassing when Rob reveals he’s the Traitor – without any attempt at deception. Maura is completely shocked. She reminds him he made a promise, and sharply tells him to stop talking. It’s satisfying to see her silence him, regardless of the situation. She’s clearly humiliated, and the way she pronounces “fool” – more like “füül” – is particularly amusing.

This win really belongs to Maura, not Rob. It’s fascinating to watch her quickly go through all the emotions of losing – from disappointment to acceptance – and she’s a great competitor about it. She playfully teases Rob while still managing to laugh it all off, even though she’s surprised. Plus, she can be happy knowing she got to wear all of her hats!
