Look, I’m a huge action movie fan, and this actor is definitely one of the biggest around. But honestly, not everything he does crushes it in theaters. What always happens, though, is his movies end up being huge hits on streaming. And his newest one is following that same path – it might not have blown up in cinemas, but I’m hearing it’s doing really well online.
The action movie debuted in cinemas on January 30th and became available to rent or buy online on February 24th. Although it didn’t perform well in theaters, the film quickly gained popularity. Just a day later, on February 25th, it reached the number one spot on the Apple TV store’s charts, according to FlixPatrol.
Jason Statham’s latest film opened at number one in both the U.S. and Canada, ending the run of a previous movie that had held the top spot for nearly three weeks. Zootopia 2 moved up to third place. While the film isn’t currently available on Amazon’s digital charts in the U.S., it debuted at number seven in Canada.
What Is Shelter About?
Jason Statham stars in his newest action movie, directed by Ric Roman Waugh – a frequent collaborator with Gerard Butler. The film, written by Ward Parry, features Statham as a retired British government hitman who’s pulled back into a dangerous, violent world.
He lives on a Scottish island with his dog, but his peaceful life is shattered when he rescues a girl from a dangerous storm. Now, he must protect her from his old agency, who want to eliminate both of them.
The movie features Bodhi Rae Breathnach as Jessie, alongside Bill Nighy, who plays Mason’s previous handler, Manafort. Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, and Harriet Walter also star. Despite having a talented cast,…
I recently looked into the box office performance of Shelter, and it’s interesting. Despite a hefty $50 million budget, the film only grossed $36 million. But here’s the kicker: it wasn’t a critical disaster! In fact, its audience score of 87% is actually better than that of last year’s A Working Man, which critics gave a “rotten” 47% rating. Interestingly, A Working Man also enjoyed an 87% approval rating from audiences, showing that sometimes critical and commercial success just don’t align.
What’s Next for Jason Statham?
Despite his recent film Shelter not performing as well as he’s used to, Jason Statham has several new projects coming up. He’ll be returning as Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, scheduled for release next year. Before that, later in 2024, he’ll appear in the action thriller Mutiny, directed by Jean-François Richet.
Jason Statham is working with Guy Ritchie again on their sixth movie project together. This film is also a partnership with Black Bear, the company that previously released Shelter and A Working Man.
Jason Statham is teaming up again with director David Leitch, who he worked with on Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. This time, Statham will play a character based on himself in the new film.
Shelter is available to rent or purchase on all digital platforms.
