EA FC 26 is using artificial intelligence to generate realistic match commentary, featuring the voices of commentators like Guy Mowbray.
Commentators are essential to the football viewing experience, informing home viewers about the game and highlighting key plays. That’s why the EA SPORTS FC series includes its own commentators to describe the action as you play.
Every possible scenario and player action – from simple passes to powerful shots on goal – has countless variations, and it’s incredibly difficult to document them all.
Guy Mowbray, a long-time sports commentator, recently told the BBC he needs to find multiple ways to say the same thing – around ten, in fact – to keep his commentary sounding smooth and natural. Interestingly, the game itself also uses artificial intelligence to help with some of the descriptions.
EA FC 26 uses AI for some names
The game uses artificial intelligence to recreate the voice of Tony Mowbray for some of the announcements of player names. This was done with his approval, and the developers clarified that they don’t intend for this to replace actual commentators.
EA explained to the BBC that they’ve been using AI in game development for things like animation and gameplay for a while now, helping their teams create more realistic and engaging football games. However, when it comes to commentary and other spoken content, AI is used to assist their commentators, not replace them.
Artificial intelligence isn’t new to video games; many developers are already using it in various ways. For example, the game Arc Raiders received criticism for using AI-generated voices, and EA SPORTS utilizes it to make player movements more realistic.
With more than 17,000 players in EA FC 26, using AI to announce names is much faster than having commentators record each one individually.
Considering how controversial AI is becoming, it might be surprising to players who believed all the commentary in EA FC 26 was recorded by actual people.
