Both an animated and a live-action Death Stranding movie are currently being developed. Here’s everything we know so far, including details about the cast and story.
Hideo Kojima has a lot on his plate. Fresh off the anticipated release of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, expected to be a top game of 2025, he’s currently involved in numerous projects, both inside and outside of the gaming world.
The world of Death Stranding is growing! After explorations in OD and Physint, a live-action movie, and now an animated film, the story is expanding beyond Sam Porter Bridges’ original adventure. The new anime film, titled Mosquito, will focus on a different part of this universe.
It’s still early in the development process, but here’s what we know about the film so far.

Is there a release date?
No, there’s currently no release date or even rough release window for Death Stranding Mosquito.
We know an anime film is being made, but it’s hard to say when it will be completed. Anime production can take a long time – the Spider-Verse movies, for example, took years to finish.
Since we’ve only had a brief look at it, and it’s not expected until 2025, it’s unlikely to be released very soon. A more realistic release date would probably be 2027.
What’s the anime movie about?
Hideo Kojima has stated the upcoming animated movie won’t center around Norman Reedus’s character, Sam. The movie will tell a completely new and unique story, as announced when it was first revealed.
We first saw it during the Kojima Productions 10th Anniversary Livestream on September 23, 2025. The livestream introduced two new characters, including the game’s main character, who doesn’t have a name yet.
I noticed these two guys are both delivery folks – Porters, I think – working for different companies. What’s really cool is they both have these Odradeks, which are like scanners that can detect Beached Things. Honestly, I’m totally puzzled about why they’re fighting so hard, though. It’s a real mystery!
Kojima hinted that the game ‘Mosquito’ revolves around the protagonist and a unique ability: they can drain something vital from others.
It’s possible this character has the ability to divide the Ha and Ka – the parts of the soul. The trailer’s opening scene seems to show a location called The Seam, which is where the dead go before moving on to The Beach. We believe our main character goes there and somehow absorbs the life force from a body, causing them to be reborn or transported.

Of course, we’ll just have to wait and see if that is indeed the case.
Death Stranding Mosquito cast & crew details
As of now, the cast for the project remains largely a mystery. While no major Hollywood stars or well-known voice actors have been revealed yet, it’s likely Hideo Kojima will bring some recognizable talent on board, as he often does.
We now know who’s working on the story and look of the film. Aaron Guzikowski, known for writing critically acclaimed projects like *Prisoners* and *Raised by Wolves*, is writing the screenplay. Kojima mentioned that Guzikowski had a strong vision for the project.
Hiroshi Miyamoto is the director of the anime, overseeing the creation of its visuals, which combine traditional hand-drawn animation with digital techniques.
