Even though the second season of ‘s run has ended, the show remains incredibly popular. About a month after the finale aired in January, it’s still a hit, consistently ranking as one of the most-watched programs on Paramount+ in recent weeks.
According to data from Flix Patrol, the drama Landman, set in West Texas, is currently the second most-watched series on Paramount+ in the United States. It’s also proven popular internationally, appearing in the top 10 lists in countries like Australia, the UK, Canada, and several South American nations.
Premiering in 2024, the series Landman follows the high-stakes world of oil drilling in Oklahoma, where fortunes are made and lost. The show centers on Tommy Norris, a landman played by Billy Bob Thornton, and the diverse group of people – from wealthy investors to hardworking oil workers – all chasing success during a boom. The cast also includes well-known actors like Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, John Hamm, Andy Garcia, and Demi Moore.
Despite mixed audience reactions (currently at 56% on Rotten Tomatoes), the show Landman has received very positive reviews from critics, earning an 80% score on the Tomatometer. This success is likely due to its compelling setting and a strong performance by Billy Bob Thornton in the lead role.
Despite mostly positive reviews, the show Landman has faced criticism. Over its two seasons, it’s been criticized for showing renewable energy, particularly wind turbines, in a negative light, and for its female characters, which some viewers feel rely on harmful stereotypes.
Billy Bob Thornton Is In For The Long Haul
I’m a huge fan of Landman, and even though it’s only been on for two seasons, I was so excited to hear from Thornton that he’s already thinking about continuing Tommy’s story for years to come! It’s great to know there’s so much more to tell.
The 70-year-old actor said he’s eager to continue with the show for the foreseeable future. He told creator Taylor Sheridan that he’s committed as long as they want him. Thornton also praised the show’s writing, cast, and talented crew, emphasizing his dedication to the series.
He confirmed he plans to continue working for as long as he can, jokingly referencing the possibility of eventually reaching a point where he’d need to take a less active role, similar to Peter Boyle’s character on Everybody Loves Raymond. He laughed, noting that he wouldn’t have mentioned his age during an interview when he was younger, but acknowledged that someday he might just have to ‘sit in a chair and eat cake’ on set – hopefully years from now.
Landman is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
