Bad Bunny Will Star in Residente’s Historical Epic Porto Rico

Bad Bunny is set to star in a film detailing the history of Puerto Rico, a topic clearly close to his heart – his art is deeply inspired by his homeland. The movie, titled Porto Rico, is described as an “epic Caribbean western” that explores the island’s journey from Borikén to Puerto Rico. It’s a project led by Puerto Rican rapper Residente, and the script was co-written by Residente and Alexander Dinelaris, who also wrote the screenplay for The Revenant. The film will also feature Edward Norton, Javier Bardem, and Viggo Mortensen.

Speaking as a producer, Norton explained that the film aims to capture the spirit of classic dramas like The Godfather and Gangs of New York – movies that are both exciting and thought-provoking, while also exploring the darker side of American history. While the plot hasn’t been officially revealed, the film’s title suggests it’s set in Puerto Rico between 1898 and 1932. This period is significant because the island’s name was changed from Porto Rico to Puerto Rico in 1932, originally altered to the English spelling in 1898 due to concerns that American audiences couldn’t pronounce the Spanish diphthong. According to Variety, the film is based on real events, meaning fans could potentially piece together the entire story simply by researching Puerto Rican history during those years.

This is Bad Bunny’s most significant acting role yet. While he’s appeared in films like Bullet Train, Caught Stealing, and had a notable part in Happy Gilmore 2, this new role marks a step up. He’s also been a frequent topic of conversation – and criticism – from conservative figures like Trump and Jill Zarin, but that kind of attention doesn’t count toward official Screen Actors Guild credit.
