Disney Passing on The Hunt for Ben Solo Is ‘Insane’ to Steven Soderbergh

Disney seems firm in its decision not to bring Ben Solo back to the Star Wars universe. Over the years, Disney’s ownership of Star Wars has seen several projects from different filmmakers cancelled or delayed. However, the news that Adam Driver was willing to reprise his role with director Steven Soderbergh, only to be turned down, was particularly upsetting to fans and those involved. Soderbergh described the situation as incredibly frustrating and disappointing in an interview with BK Mag, explaining that he had anticipated spending the next two years working on a Star Wars film.

Steven Soderbergh and Adam Driver had developed a sequel idea, written by Scott Z. Burns, that would have focused on Ben Solo, Driver’s character Kylo Ren, and explored what happened after his redemption in The Rise of Skywalker. Driver described the script as incredibly impressive. Soderbergh explained the project involved about two and a half years of unpaid work from his team, including Driver and Burns, along with co-writer Rebecca Blunt. Kathleen Kennedy, former president of Lucasfilm, acknowledged the script was excellent and left the door open to future possibilities. However, Soderbergh revealed the project ultimately stalled because Disney executives didn’t believe Ben Solo could have survived.

It’s remarkable that the people running the Star Wars franchise – the ones who routinely bring characters back from the dead and create incredible storylines – couldn’t figure out a way to bring back the popular character Ben Solo. It’s almost as if they didn’t consider the possibilities within the Star Wars universe. That’s why they let director Steven Soderbergh and writer Matthew Burns explain what happened. Soderbergh said they were simply told to explore the idea, and he’d already envisioned the entire story. He was frustrated that no one else would get to see it, and expected the conversation to focus on logistics and budget. But it never even got that far – he called the whole situation “insane.”

It’s uncertain whether the new Disney CEO, Josh D’Amaro, will prioritize bringing back the character Ben Solo. Interestingly, D’Amaro, who previously oversaw Disney’s parks, will be taking over the role of Kylo Ren – appearing as a walking character alongside Darth Vader at Disneyland. Some speculate Disney avoids prominently featuring attractive actors – like Adam Driver and perhaps even Pedro Pascal, whose face is rarely fully shown in The Mandalorian.
