Prime Video Should Repeat Its Jack Ryan Trick With Alan Ritchson’s Reacher

Given the success of Alan Ritchson’s Reacher on Prime Video, the streaming service could follow the model of its Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan franchise and create a spinoff movie. Both Reacher and Jack Ryan share many similarities, making a film extension a logical next step.

Both the Prime Video series Jack Ryan and Reacher are adapted from popular book series. Jack Ryan is based on the novels by Tom Clancy, originally published from the 1980s through the 2010s, and Reacher comes from the novels by Lee Child.

Alan Ritchson’s Reacher Deserves A Movie

Lee Child’s popular Jack Reacher book series first appeared on screen in 1997 with the novel Killing Floor, adapted into two movies starring Tom Cruise. Though those films were entertaining, they didn’t quite capture what made the books so appealing. Thankfully, the recent, more accurate adaptation on Prime Video has remedied that.

The Reacher franchise has taken a surprising turn, leaving the Prime Video series in a unique spot. While there are older Reacher movies with a different actor, the TV show’s huge success across three seasons – and the creation of a spin-off – makes now a great time for a new film adaptation.

Amazon’s Jack Ryan Film Is An Interesting Experiment

Like the Reacher series a few years back, Amazon’s Jack Ryan started strong when the action thriller first premiered in 2018. After four successful seasons, the franchise will continue with a new Jack Ryan movie on Prime Video.

Similar to the character Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan has been played by different actors in past film adaptations of Tom Clancy’s books. Harrison Ford famously portrayed Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, but that hasn’t prevented Prime Video from creating a new series with John Krasinski taking on the role.

While Tom Cruise previously played Jack Reacher, Alan Ritchson has truly become known as the definitive version of the character. Given the show’s success, a movie focusing on Ritchson’s Reacher would likely do well, and a larger film budget would allow for more expansive storytelling.

How Many Seasons Will Reacher Have?

A movie based on the Reacher character could solve a problem with the show: episodes that drag on and feel unnecessary. With nearly 30 Reacher novels already published, the series has the potential to continue for many years – possibly another ten seasons or even longer.

The series could end not just because they’re running out of books to adapt, but also because Alan Ritchson is becoming a major movie star and might pursue other film opportunities. Therefore, the Reacher series should consider a movie spin-off, similar to what happened with Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, before Ritchson gets too established to continue with the show.
